Hey Everyone,

I've decided to give this spark plug modding technique a test run on my 240 (B23E). 8)

http://fueleconomytips.com/content/view ... 1&Itemid=2

I've already drilled out a brand new set of plugs and am ready to install them. I just want to make sure I orient them the right way when I install them. I'm assuming that I want the lines I drew on the plugs to end up at somewhere between 6:00 and 7:00 when the plugs are tightened all the way in if I follow the marking and indexing methods described in the above article. Is that correct ? If not, where on the imaginary clock dial should that line on the plug be at ?

I'm curious to see if modding the spark plugs and indexing them as per the above article will yield any noticeable improvements in performance and/or fuel economy. I'll let you know how it works after I've had a chance to burn a few tanks of gas on the new plugs.

Thanks,

Roj

best thing to have is a few extra plugs because if a plug doesn't work in one cylinder you try it in another and so on....so lets say you get 2/4 or 3/4 index'd and the 4th plug just wont work in the last one then this is where you want some extras.....and hell...just use a china marker on the plug so that you can rub it off and return the plugs you dont use.

Better yet, don't worry about it? Screw them in 'til they're tight and walk away?

Dunno...that's how I do it anyway...

On a stock engine I really don't think you well see any difference, The only time I have seen indexing make a difference in on very high conpression engines where ignition in general is a problem. But do keep up updated if you do measure any inprovement

I wasn't able to get all the plugs oriented the exact way I wanted when I installed them but I didn't sweat it too much and just tried to get it as close as possible.

I may be imagining it but I really feel as though I'm getting a lot better performance and torque out of my engine since I installed the set of modified plugs. That being said I should point out that the increase in power may be due, at least in part, to the fact that my exhaust system has just developed a rather healthy crack where the hanger bracket is welded onto one of the exhaust pipes just ahead of the first muffler. So now my engine may be breathing better due to lower back pressures and this may account for some or all of the increased torqueyness and pick-up (I think) I'm seeing right now. Yah, my car's a bit louder than it was before (but not like reaaaal loud) but I actually sorta like the sound it's making right now. It sounds kinda cool and "dangerous". 8) Vrooooom budda budda budda vroooooOOOOOM VROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM ! heh heh heh....

So I think I'm recommending that some of you try that plug modification technique as well. It may just work like the article says it does.

More later...

Roj

Or do both things and just give 'er ! (It seems to be working for me ! )

The funny thing is I had this teenaged Tuner dude staring my rumbling masculine sounding brick up and down when I pulled up next to him at a stoplight. We kind of raced off the light until I had to make a left turn about half a block up. His car sounded a lot like mine but it had some fancy wide bore exhaust system on it that probably cost him $300 - $400 at least. I couldn't help but chuckle when I thought about how much he spent to get his car to sound like that when all it takes is a 3 - 4 inch long crack in your exhaust system between the header and the first muffler which you can get for free just like I did !

roj, do me a favour and come to the dyno day, it'd be very interesting if there is any sort of power increase to putting those fancy spark plugs in there.

sound good?
