Hi Guys,

I just thought I would just share the weekends efforts on the car front. With the recent turn for the better with the weather - Coburn Performance has been very busy lately. We've had Greg in making my compressor smoke from all the sandblasting he's doing to make the YROG rise from the ashes. Dave came over with his S70 looking for all the world like someone had done a little blasting on it as well. I had to touch up the crack that I put in the side of the paint on the 242 (must secure the argon tank...) before winter hit. Let's see how it all shook out.

First up - Dave's car. We sanded and sanded and did a little more sanding - then we took off the bumper cover and hood (Dave drove it home this way - "honest officer this is the way Volvo made them...clear hoods were in that year"). I gave it a shot of primer on the worst spots, but didn't prime the entire hood. So last night we were here with the S70.

Bumper cover - There appears to be no primer on it - so I didn't prime it.

I managed to get the filler knocked down on the 242 and it got primer as well.

This morning the weather looked good, so I got the base on the 242 by lunch time. By the time Dave got here the weather was still looking good and I just had to lay down the clear and we could get the colour on his car.

Now, his parts are in the garage and I can't get a car in my garage, so you guessed it, I'm painting in the back lane! The sky was a perfect overcast and there was a light breeze. No problem - the base went on perfectly.

I had masked up the car from the belt line on the passenger side (this is where the repair is) with light plastic and masked the rest as normal. By the time Dave and I were admiring the clear, the wind whips up. Now there are 50 KPH gusts coming down the alley with dust, leaves and my plastic going in the fresh clear! Crap. Dave heads home to get some tarps.

We made a little tent using spare 122 rotors as weights on the corners and a mitt full of zip ties. Greg stopped by - he wasn't looking too sure about all this. I plucked the junk out of the paint and get ready for coat 2 and 3 in the gale force winds.

Here's the result - believe it or not - I got away with it! Needs a little buff, but it is OK.

Good use of the ladder.

Here's the finish (I didn't get a picture of it all back together)

Then on to Dave's bumper cover and hood. I only had 2 pints of shootable product - little thin on the volume, but I loaded up the gun and hosed it off.

The hood still needs another coat (we'll have to sand it down and do it again tomorrow) - you can still see many of the rock chips.

Image

I had enough paint for 3 coats on the bumper cover - it looks fine.

That's it for now - what a crazy weekend.

Well, tonight I got home and got to work on that hood. I cleaned it again but this time I used Comet and cleaned the heck out of it. Then sanded it with 800 and then 1000 grit. Dave got here just in time to help me load the gun and get'r done. Looks excellent now. I'm going to buff it for him before I give it back - fruit flies will do that to your paint!

Further evidence that I need a proper paint booth or a bigger garage.

Nope - they'd probably wonder if something wasn't going on in my garage  . Lethbridge is quite windy - so the smell goes away pretty quickly. I'm going to rig up a large barrel fan and some furnace filters this winter as my box fans are annoying.

Ok, after a few more coats of paint we let the hood sit for a couple of days and then I wet sanded and polished the hood this afternoon. Then it was time for installing the hood. I'm pretty pleased with the end result. There are still a few stone chips that are visible, but we always knew this was a likely outcome. The finish is just about flawless - thanks to the Iwata LPH 400 spray gun.

On with the show:

I didn't have time to get a good shot of the 242 - but this morning I took a pic.

I can't thank you enough for all your help Craig getting this done. =D> You spent an enormous amount of time and the hood and bumper look amazing. :D

I really appreciate all the time and effort you put into this project.

And I learnt a whole lot about how to do body work and paint. I guess I need to get a beater to practice on.

As soon as I figure out how to post pictures I will add a few as well. #-o

I visited Charlie Teetzel today in Sherwood Park to get some 1800 parts and he has a 73 1800 coupe that could use your attention.

How is Charlie? I thought he moved to Squamish or some such place. Does he still have those 122 fiberglass fender molds?

Here's the job finally finished. I polished the paint yesterday and put on the trim strip. I like the trim - it nicely finishes the car and isn't very noticeable...the look I was going for.

Beautiful work Craig.
You have me motivated, next weekend I think I may take out my spray gun ...
Dust it off, load up some product and spray laquer on our new maple doors :D

Charlie is good. He is in Edmonton for a little while and then I think he goes back to Squamish. Apparently he spends his winters in Vietnam now so if you are looking for someone to visit on your next winter trip to Vietnam give him a call. 8)

I got some trim for my 1800 and a right rear piece for the 1800 bumper to replace mine that is bashed up. Unfortunately I think it is too rusted to be useful. His cars in Sherwood Park are just about stripped so I think he is going to thin them out a bit. It was good visiting him for a couple of hours.

Awesome!!! =D>

Who needs a paint booth when you can do this good a job in a windstorm with flying fruit flies and leaves.
