Hi everyone,

New Volvo owner and first post.

I've got a '97 850 and, first of all, I'm loving the four wheel disc brakes. But when I had the wheels off I noticed I had a tiny crack in the front brake hoses connected to the two front calipers. So I'm looking to switch that out fairly quickly.

My question is: I love steel-braided brake lines on motorcycles for the added firmness and what I think is better feedback, but there's no brake booster on a bike. In all, it's a less complicated system with far less in the way of lines. Do any of you recommend for or warn against installing them in a Volvo?

Thanks!

Braided lines on your Volvo will give you the same driving feel as you experienced on your bike. firmer pedal and better feedback because the braided lines expand less than rubber. In my opinion they are worth installing

Welcome to the board - I'm pretty sure the majority of us run braided lines on all our cars. At least both my cars have them.

Most steel braided lines are not D.O.T approved and are for off road use only.
Read the package.

IPD sells DOT approved kits only. I checked and the 122, 240 and 850 kits that I looked at all had the yellow DOT approved band.

FCP also sold DOT approved ones, but seem to have stopped since the quality wasn't really where it's at on the ones I've purchased. No leaks or failures, but the parts that make them DOT approved tend to fail.

Having said that, I've never replaced hoses without doing anything else to the brake system, and have never been able to attribute any improvement in feel to the hoses themselves. Most times I'm replacing cracked, aged, swollen hoses with new ones, bleeding out 20 year old brake fluid, and replacing pads/rotors at the same time. Even with all that, I'd say that the improvement in feel given by the hoses is subtle, at best, since there really is NO feel to the brake system of most of these things. My old yellow 240 had magnificent brakes and they felt positive and responsive, unlike anything I've since owned (except for the Wilwood stuff), but it had the full treatment and not a whole lot of crap in between the pedal and the pavement. Volvos have good powerful brakes, but they're not very "motorcycle-y".

We put braided hoses on Roberta's 94 850 and the rest of the system remained stock. I don't think I noticed a damn thing.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone.

Okay, where's the best place for me to get OEM or better brake hoses? Thanks!

Linky no worky...

Some of us have accounts at local wholesale parts warehouses. If you're going to spend more than $20 each, get in touch with me...

Oh phooey, I wish I'd checked this earlier. But thank you for the offer! I spent $80 and got the genuine Volvo parts. They were in stock and I've got to get it done quickly.

I wish these things happened more often in the summer . . .

Linky do too worky? I posted from work but just clicked from my phone and it took me right there... Weird.

Anyway, that wasn't my suggestion of where to buy them, just as a price check. However if you're happy with the place, let us know 'cause I've never ordered from there before, and they do list lots of stuff...
