I'll prolong the suspense a while longer it seems...
I spent a few hours crawling around the car today and am pleasantly surprised at its condition. The underside is completely rust free and clean. A few minutes with a pressure washer and it would look like a new car. The interior is reasonable. Everything but some switch illumination seems to work; even the seat heaters. The glove box door cover is loose but that's pretty standard for these cars. A small adjustment of the reverse lockout bar makes it slide into first as smooth as can be now. The shifter bushings are shot so the shifter is a bit floppy. Some new bushings should fix that up. Maybe a little shorter throw while I'm at it...
The AMM has me a bit perplexed. I cranked it and it fired on the first turn and didn't miss a beat. Idled smooth as butter. Likely helps that it was 15 degrees in the garage. If I slowly bring up the idle, it runs fine until I get to about 3000 rpm and then it seems to stumble slightly. It does rev higher with no issues though. I pulled out the AMM and sprayed it with some AMM cleaner. Not sure if that helped or not since it really wasn't misbehaving to begin with. I think someone has been messing with it though. The plug covering the adjusting screw was missing. I had nothing to lose so started playing with it. If I screwed it one way or the other it would seem to temporarily change the idle but then the idle would settle back in. Maybe someone can explain how that thing works?
I checked the ball joints and tie rod ends. There is a little play in the drivers front but I'm pretty sure it's a little bit of bearing play since the backing plate doesn't move, just the wheel. There is a little play in the steering but it looks more like the rack is a little loose. Both front calipers look a little damp (only enough that dust is sticking to them- not wet) so I'll have to watch that. Oh...and the winter tires on it are Dunlop Graspic. Don't know if they're DS-3s but they have a fair bit of tread so we'll see how they work. I can always throw the Hankooks from the 740 on it if the Dunlops don't work.
Crappy phone camera pictures coming shortly...
