That policy is for existing accounts. For new enquiries, this is the answer you get:

"Thank you for your inquiry. Due to the complexity of U.S. Export regulations, McMaster-Carr only accepts orders from our established customers in Canada. We’re sorry we can’t help you."

It's enough to enrage a guy. I've shopped with them once and the shipping charges were insane, but it seems that they would be just as happy pissing off all Canadians so they don't have to deal with us. I can't imagine what would be so difficult about shipping anything they sell up our way, and clearly it's not about shipping anyway since they won't even sell to Canadians willing to ship to a US destination! Maddening.

I'm not sure how I got so lucky. I set up an account 6 months ago. We can order whatever we want and have it shipped to whatever US address we choose. We've bought close the $1000 worth of nuts, bolts washers and screws from them...

The issue apparently relates to the US military being their largest customer and not wanting certain countries to get various products. I'm guessing metric shoulder bolts are used for making weapons or something.

Go figure, I set up a company with them in 2010, after their ban went into effect. Apparently it's a bit of a crap shoot as to who gets through. Have you tried shipping to an address in Canada? One of my clients, already established with them, tried having some material drop shipped to my location but they wouldn't have it. Now they pick up stuff for me and send it my way. It's a royal pain.

They should have a look at Digi Key. Every time you place an order with Digi Key there is a box that you check telling them if the product will be used outside of Canada. Takes care of "the complexity of U.S. Export regulations".

Well -- I just placed an order yesterday online with McMaster and it went through, just got confirmation of shipment. Hopefully this is not a fluke and we can now do business!!

Sweet! Was this order placed with a personal account, or via business?

It was for business, but that is also what I used two years ago when I was refused then. I'm hopeful they have relaxed their stance on shipments to Canada.

I'm still not sure if there was policy change, different employee interpretation of the rules, oversight on their part or else. I won't bring it up with them as long as I can place orders and receive material. So far I've had to order about $1500 worth of stuff through my own customer who then forwarded to me. It was a hassle so it's nice this one came through.
