Hey all,

So, i had a chance to tear into my b230ft block that i have sitting on a stand this weekend.

I had spun a rod bearing but i didn't think the crank would be in too bad of shape...

To my untrained eye it doesn't look horrible, but i'm told that the crankshaft is basically unusable at this point.

I don't have the tools to measure the crank yet, but at a first glance...What do you think? should i be looking for a new b230 crank? or can i get away with grinding this one with undersized bearings?

Ouch - you sure did pound that one...without a micrometer, it's really hard to know, but bearings are available in a variety of oversizes. Just grind it and it will be fine. It will cost a couple of hundred bucks max (YRMV) or just locate a good used one that is on spec. Let me know if you need rods.

Perhaps this is an opportunity to try and find a penta forged crank?
Do the marine engines follow the "k" block "L" block scheme? If so, are the crankshafts different on those engines?
This engine is a 94 squirter (...yes it actually is a squirter  )
Thanks for the offer on rods, but i've got a nice set of h-beams i was hoping to use :)

I really wouldn't bother, the crank is easily replacable and if you grind a cast crank I don't think you're left with a very good product. A forged crank is worth saving, a cast... not me.

Yea matt, I remember we had this discussion about the b230 cranks. I put a "wanted" out on tbricks, see if anyone's got something for me I can get for cheap.

Some of the technical background would argue the opposite- cast cranks have the same metallurgy from the surface to the core, whereas forged cranks- at least in the muscle car era- were more often than not surface treated. In itself taking .25mm off of 50-odd-mm does not create a concern. Also cast cranks tend to self dampen harmonics- not entirely but a little, and more than forged.

That said, don't re-use the crank. In fact, why not get back to a b23 block?
