I've been slowly collecting parts to build a 242 into what I've always wanted. I finally found a nice body a month ago.

Anyways. Car will be driven on the street and as many track days as possible.

My goal is 401whp (wierd goal I know). Strong under the curve power.

It's going to have all the supporting mods.

16v head.

I have

2 b23e blocks. (Not much if any ridging)

1 b230ft squirter block with a good amount of ridge.

1 b230ft early block. I was told it's an 89 but I haven't been into it so don't know.

Honestly the b23e blocks are probably in the better shape without actually measuring them out. (All the blocks are at my dads in kamloops).

I could put squirter a in the b23 block. It has a forged crank. The millet crank gear is available for it from yoshi (I'd be going with one on the b230 anyways).

Should I bring those blocks up here and have them sonic tested or would you just keep looking for a b230 block that is in better shape. I'm not in a rush for anything. Pulling a block a the jy doesn't really excite me, and there hasn't really been a goo candidate in a while anyways.

Thoughts?

Jordan

Hmmm, not sure on this one as I've not finished my swap yet and I'm not doing a 16V or looking for magic numbers. The main advantage of the B23 is the forged internals...I'm not sure this even matters for 100 hp/hole. I haven't heard of anyone breaking a cast crank at or around those figures. If B230FT was an option, then I'd do the later blocks with the thrust bearing in the normal rear bearing position. If I was doing it, and I am, then just do it right and use the best of everything. It's not cool to be sitting on the side of the road with a windowed block.

In my swap, I've added squirters and h-beams and some core plug retainers. I have a B23E coming out of my car that has no/minimal ridge (last time I had the head off...4 years ago) but it needs to be honed to first oversize or have oversize rings installed. It's available - but I don't know if this gets you anything you don't have. I do know that Mahle just did a run of first oversized B230FT pistons (I have a set), but the B23 pistons are rare. If you're doing H-beams, then you could go with custom pistons.

I'm going to use h-beams and forged pistons. I'll likely use the RSI stuff and avoid JVaB.

The forged crank interests me. I'm just having a hard time finding a nice b230 block

I can think of 16 valves that may be a whole lot easier to do.... :)

I like the B23, myself, but the right year of a B230 is strong enough for most. The early B230s aren't worth spit, in my eyes, and finding a late B230 is about as easy as finding a B23. If you're going with custom rods & pistons, I can't think of a lot of reasons to choose the B230 over the B23, considering the level you want to play at, but the same argument could be made the other way.

If you're thinking you might want to avoid RSI stuff and use JVAB i might have a set of h-beams for you

You have JVaB rods? B230 or b23?

RSI has a clearance sale on the 96.5 long rod 16v pistons for a b23. I contemplated picking them up and doing a b23.

I think his group buy was for the regular old china rods.

I'm not wanting to kill a sale - but JVAB rods are for sale all the time on eBay from the factory. I've bought a set from John and a set from eBay - same thing. Anyway, don't get the ARP 2000's from China, they will be counterfeit. Every length is available for around $250 a set.

Just finished prepping my block for paint - enjoy.
