I have recently purchased a 1984 volvo 242 dl. The car came from the united states, and has the b23 with m46 transmission. I have big plans for this car, but am a little lost on where to start. I would like to get the car running and driving well before anything else. I am new to volvos and would love to hear whatever you guys have to say on some common things i should look after first.

Thanks

It doesn't run? What have you tried so far?

At the age these cars are, honestly anything could be a cause for a non running condition. It could be a dead battery all the way to a dead engine.

I just got the car so havent tried much. Car does run and drive, but has some issues. there is a surge at idle and sometimes it idles high probably around 1200rpm. Shifter shakes under acceleration, aswell the car shakes in second gear in the higher rpm. Car is going to need some engine and transmission mounts forsure.

Well you definitely need to Stage Zero it. Plugs & wires, cap & rotor, set the valve lash, seafoam, filters, injector cleaner and an Italian tune-up. Check for vacuum leaks, replace the hoses and be sure the tees aren't cracked. Check for vacuum leaks at the injector seals too, and especially at the accordion hose between the throttle body and AMM. Do the V-belts, timing belt and idler while you're at it, change all three mounts and check your U-joints & center bearing.

'84s are funny in that they're a 1 year only fuel and ignition system, and I think a 1 year only distributor too. If your AMM or ignition computer die, consider upgrading the whole system to LH2.2 or 2.4.

The surging idle could be a sticky idle controller, carb cleaner works in there. If the accordion hose is cracked (likely), it could easily explain your running issues. Start there, worry about mechanicals later.

Thanks so much! I am going to start there. Where do most albertans source their volvo parts from? i know of IPD, but would love to know of anything else. Having this forum has already been a valuable resource. I will likely have more questions, and will post the results when i get around to getting the stage 0 done on the 240.

If you're in Calgary, Dale (Pylon) can get you most anything. Problem is, Dale's on the road for a week and won't be able to place or pick up an order. Otherwise, FCP is a great bet, and shipping ain't too bad.
