So I am looking at a 1985 Volvo 740 Turbo Wagon and I was recently told that it has a stalling problem. That being that when it gets up to standard running temperature it stalls out and won't start until its cooled off again. I've never heard of ANY cars ever having that problem. If anyone has ANY information or suggestions as to what the cause of it is it would really help cause I wanna buy it and use it as a daily for a while cause I know it will go forever.

Maybe a temperature sensor issue?

I really don't know but would that cause a motor to stall itself out? I have been trying to think of so many different things that could cause it to be doing this bit I can't figure it out. It's really bothering me.

If I had to guess it would be the fuel pump relay, works when cold and then the bad solder joint fails when hot. You need to do some trouble shooting when it's dead, the engine obviously has compression because it does run so you're losing spark or fuel when hot. The FP relay guess comes from experience with the same symptom and it's an easy one to try if you have a spare known good relay available. Without doing some diagnostics it could be a lot of things...

My first guess would be a base idle that is way off due to vacuum lears, probably a split/rotted am to turbo hose, and when cold it gets enough fuEl and air to run but not once the warm up cycle is over.

From there moving on to rotting wiring harness, and start picking relays and sensors...

Thanks for the suggestions guys. The guy said it never did it before. Then he parked it for a while and then when he tried driving it, it did the stalling. I also have to figure out the spark issue. Not really a huge consern as I have 2 other engines sitting at home that both probably run so parts won't be hard lol.
