Hey Guys - here's a few pictures of the latest project at Coburn Performance. I'm going to do a run of stainless steel B18/B20 headers for 122/1800/140 series cars. Tuned lengths, Tri-Y design and all in stainless steel. I'm not sure what use this is to anyone, but if you're interested in getting in line, two are spoken for and three remain. PM for further details (these are not going to be competition for cheap crappy IPD headers - these are for people that care).

Little bling - new header logo.

More to come as I get them built.

I was trying to get the first prototype done over Christmas but a cold has set me back. Some very modest progress was made despite my illness. First up was a trip through the degrease bath and a rinse in the tub (all part of my master plan to upset my wife so she agrees that subsequent garage builds will include plumbing). Here are all the bends drying. You have to clean the oil used in forming them off of them prior to welding.

Then it was on for 5 long hours of brushing all of the bends over 2 days.

Now they're starting to look pretty good. Not all done in this picture, but you get the idea.

Had a few hours to start to get the mock up going. The first problem is working out the tuned lengths using Pipemax for a mild built B20...then trying to fill the vast negative space with tubes. Many moments when I needed a third or fourth hand...but the first fit up went pretty well. I'll be putting in locating elements so that I know where they go for the rest of the headers.

So the 2-3 branch is next and should be easier than the 1-4 branch turned out to be. Then the final Y and out to the exit. All will get fully purge welded when it's all been tested in Matt's car.

It's taken me a while to get the first one tacked up - I got a flu over the holidays and haven't been able to shake it. This has limited my garage time to only a few hours. I found the time this weekend to get the first header tacked up. I had to switch from my carbide cutting blade to my abrasive saw with a diamond blade to cut this tube. The stainless dulled the carbide in only a few cuts! I also had a devil of a time fitting up the various tubes. Without tape, I have no idea how I'd do this job - you need an extra set of hands at the very least. Now that this phase is done (and if it fits an actual car), then I can finish mounting holders for the various tubes in the jig and the fabrication will go a lot faster on the second one.

Here's the pictures.

You need a bottom end rebuild first Jim. There will be 5 made at this point. At the very least the merge isn't complete garbage like the IPD Patriot junk header. I'm allowed to say that right?

Oh I know, just dreaming a bit. Once that gets going there may be an opportunity to "have" to make other repairs.

Does the SU heat shield clear? Looks like it might be close?

I'm just moving that branch around right now - hit the cross member. The heat shield was sitting on the tube. 1/8" settled that. I did get a little more done on it today. Should be ready for final welding in a few days. I'm working hard to make sure everything fits. Not easy to get this all right.
