By now most of you know I picked up some 16" Enkei wheels for cheap-cheap. These were to mount the 205/55/16 tires I bought earlier this year for some other wheels that never materialized (long story). Anyhow, after mounting the tires, I eagerly jacked up the 242 to put them on.

A couple of things were quickly evident. The first was that these were dual pattern wheels and, as such, have no voids between the lug holes. This would normally not be a problem except they are 38mm offset and I need to run 20mm spacers to make them work on the front of the 242. The problem with 20mm spacers is they aren't deep enough to fully countersink a stock wheel lug and nut when attached to the hub. So...problem one is I can't mount them on 20mm spacers unless I go to a simple sandwich spacer and run longer lugs. Been done before; just not my first choice.

Problem number two is the lug holes are designed for tuner-style lugs that have low profiles. A Virgo lug nut will fit in the bore but there is no room for a socket to torque them on. Not a huge problem as tuner lugs are readily available and pretty cheap. (I just picked up two full sets for $35 on eBay).

So...strike two. What to do? Well, the 122 was set up to accept Et42 wheels and have a spacer built into the front brake rotor hat so no spacer needed. I thought the rears has 25mm spacers so shouldn't be an issue there either. It turns out the rears had only 20mm spacers so I decided to fit them without spacers as I always thought the rear wheels were too far outboard anyways. Here is the result...

And...now what to do with those 17" wheels that were on the 122?

Well...

Those are ET42 with 20mm front and 25mm rear spacers. I like the white wheels on the 242. I'm not so crazy about the silver wheels on the 122. What do y'all think?

I like the white wheels MUCH better on the 122. Though, the silver ones have a vague suggestion of a minilite, and if you tuck the rear end like the front end, the back end wouldn't look so jacked up and silly.

Gotta get those rear springs out & cut 'em. Regardless of what you do with the front end, the rear end needs to be lower.

Edit - the 122 looks lots better without the spacers, too. Makes the arse look even higher than with the spacers, though. Now you'll be able to squat the back end without rubbing, so bonus there.

WOW, totally different look on the 122, I think I also prefer the white ones on the 122 but damn they also look good on the 242.

So, if isn't terribly obvious Ian, the Enkei wheels aren't for sale at this point. I'm going to keep my eyes open for another set of something for either the 122 or the 242 for next spring. The Enkeis will hold the 122 off the ground this winter...

I dont like it, I think the white 17s were a perfect size diameter wise for the 122...the 16s just dont fit right.

As for the 242, I dont mind them but they are definately not my first choice. Plus it looks goofy already with the front end so high.

+1. My thoughts to a T almost, except for the white bit. I like graphite wheels with a polished lip, but I also avoid cleaning brake dust, so don't listen to me.

I quite like 16s on the vintage car better. Big wheels on vintage cars look goofy to me. Not my thing really.

Your 242 looks as jacked up in the front relative to the rear as mine does just about! That is hilarious. Though I'm driving a silver 242 now..oops...I said too much.

Yes it is obvious  but that is OK, in the spring you may be selling a USED set of Enkei's (re: lower cost) I have dids :P

SMOK'IN - I like the silver on the Red car, but the white on white looks a little odd. If you take a full coil off the rear spring, you get almost a full inch of drop, but you may want a little more than that. As ghetto as it is, it will work (don't you have progressives on the rear, or did you only put the red springs on the front - if you've got the progressives, all bets are off). I find my cut rear springs too soft, but haven't gotten serious about finding a correct spring to replace it as I'm suposse to be getting a set.
