Well I thought I would start a project thread for my two cars, my 83 242 turbo and my 87 245 dl

The story of these two are an interesting one, as I got both of them (along with one other) from the same guy.

I originally paid $500 for the 242, it was his project car so it came pre (half) disassembled, but its a US spec car (supposedly a euro import), with a flathood, stock quad squares, sooper dooper skinny bumpers, half finished body work and two very small rust holes.

the day I went to go pick the car up (from penhold... all 4 of my 240s have come from red deer) I picked the guy up at this feild in penhold where he had been storing 4 other cars, when I arrived I learnt that his girlfriend had broken up with him just then... a week before the lease was up on their place in sylvan lake... so he offered me another one of his cars... for free. enter the 245, 517 thousand kms and a timing problem, which ended up being just two switched plug wires, neither of the two previous owners figured that one out.

the cars were trailered from penhold / sylvan to my quarter section in sundre... where they sat for several months untill (last, last) October, where I (finally) got my own place with my gf... which included a garage. so my buddy and I went up and pulled the 225k mile b21ft with a tractor. first time pulling a motor. the 242 hasent been touched really since
Image

come winter I went up again with a trailer and got the 245, which actually ran enough to get it on the trailer under its own power.

back in Calgary I timed and re-timed the motor to try and get it running. after some help from you guys, I determined the car had two switched plug wires. DUH.

add some foglights, andys old chalkboard flathood, refinished virgos and p205/55/r15 tires, new plugs, wires, timing belt, cap + rotor, and coil, we get this

After a few months I decided that the wagon needed MOAR POWA, with a good .42/.48, intercooler and numerous other parts off the 242, I +t'd it.

Along with a new headgasket, new waterpump, thermostat, radiator, and numerous other gaskets I got it running with the NA computers and Injectors... not the best setup, but when this moron on TB gets me my crap I can finally get the car up to a nice base. with the cooling system in order now, I will be able to turn up the boost in the near future.

Also replaced the rusty ass rear hatch with a rust free 85 hatch I happened to find in the yard. now painted black, It looks like this

[insert pics here later]

As for the 242, its done nothing but sit in my garage, ( I brought it down after the wagon got on the road in September) and stripped the interior and engine block. next step is to rebuild the motor and get the car re-wired this summer.

pics soon

sooo, I had an episode last night trying to swap cams. we got it in there, running and all. torqued it to spec. took it around the corner and the car dies on us after a horrible bearing noise. I pop the hood and remove the oil cap, a plume of white oil smoke comes out.... shit. Now the cam is no longer spinning with the gear.

pics of damage when I get out there this afternoon... hopefully it is not too bad since I shut down the car IMMEDIATELY

Sounds like the cam pin sheared...

Unless it was a K cam, you should not have pistons kissing valves.

It was a B cam. it roasted bearing number 3, for lack of oil, or dirt in the bearing, or other ish. It also sheared the pin.

ill just go pull another head, any way to resurface the bearing on the cam? machine shop I take it?

cams are a dime a dozen, not worth paying to fix.

are you sure you had the bearing caps in the right order and the right way around? were they from the same head? you can't mix and match...

Ugh...yeah...no mixy matchy when it comes to bearing caps. Don't suppose you know which were originally in the head? Although now the head may be screwed with the cam seizing in there...

If you're going to use a turbo head, make sure to get it well cleaned up and checked out. As mentioned by many others in many other threads, #3 valve guide tends to be pretty worn out, and if it's ever overheated, there's a good chance there will be cracks between the valve seats which you won't see until it's thuroughly cleaned.
I would consider grabbing a non-turbo head if you have the option.

And regardless of where you get it, spending some time and money on it will pay off big time down the road in the performance department. even just minor polishing and cleaning up ports and casting defects, etc. 3 angle valve grind, new seals...

or just buy my complete motor.
