Hello to all!

I have a 2001 V70 XC...Great car but is now slipping from 2nd to 3rd or coming from 3rd to 2nd. Servo is not the problem and I have already had the shift adaptation reset.

Does anyone have a lead on a new or rebuilt transmission that will work with my vehicle?
Please let me know if there is ANY information you can provide.

Thanks,

My best advice is to take it to Paul at Bert and Jacks and have him swap it out/fix it.

Ellis Auto Drome in Lethbridge has been doing a number of P2 cars from Calgary as well as they claim to be much cheaper doing the infamous bevel gear replacement on AWD cars. If you don't want the hassle of driving it down here I would second taking it to Bert & Jacks, do NOT go to Valentine or Mr. Volvo....

Also, hate to say this but what I see for 01 XC used prices if it has any kind of miles on it you will be upside down on the value of the car after doing a transmission swap especially if you are considering new or rebuilt. I don't believe there is such a thing as a rebuilt transmission for these cars as even the dealer just swaps in a new or reman unit from Volvo. I could be wrong but a call or two to some trans shops will let you know. Good luck.

Thanks for the good advice. The car only has 118,000kms on it and I plan on having the vehicel for a while as it has proven to be remarkable for my long distance trips I have started to take for work. I swear if I did not have that car just this last winter when we had that horrible snow storm in the SK, I would have been in the ditch. I was hitting drifts higher than the hood on Trans Can and this car had no problem pushing through it. Passed numerous trucks and suv's in the ditch. Once I got to my hotel in Regina, I learned they shut down the highway not more than 20 mins after I got off. I feel I own this vehicle my life.

I will contact Bert & Jacks and even Ellis Auto Drome. I do not mind doing a little driving.

Thanks everyone for the comments

Very cool. With the lower kms, I could see swapping the tranny would be worth it. But Jim is right, in that the value of these cars has plummeted so much that after a certain point it probably wouldn't be. Unless you were planning on doing the work yourself?

Any other issues with the car? I'm still seriously considering a '04-07 XC70.

No other issues with this vehicle. I have done simple maintenance such as brakes and spark plugs. Only other larger maintenance I had to do was the Coils springs. I found a great website that sold the springs for $175 shipped to my door and I did the work myself. Valentine wanted over $500 just for the parts alone! haha. Scammers.

My XC has great features that have made this vehicle very handy for me. 3rd row seating to be able to pick up a load of drunk friends a couple times. The rear seats have a retractable mesh net that I can put up for when I cargo my dog as well. Although they say you don't need premium fuel, I would always suggest it in a vehicle like this as the power is much more responsive when using it.

I'm with Greg...one day I'll sell the 240 and get a grown-up car (I'll be buried in my 122 however).

I think this is key in getting in to an XC, the Haldex AWD came in 04 and is much better than the earlier unit's.

Yep. That's the plan. I've heard the AWD got even better in '06 but I'm not sure why. The '04+ cars also made more power which is good.

For this kind of money and with the mileage, I'm pretty tempted. Madness for a car that was 60k not that long ago.

OOOOO! Wood trim!!! Love that interior.

Thanks for the heads up Davey. Sounds like its treating you okay other than the tranny. Any AWD related issues?
I do most of my shopping at FCP Groton. Check 'em out if you haven't already.

Ad had been up for a while, and was on Autotrader as well. Seemed legit. The price was very low though.

Was doing some reading last night, and I'm not sure when the "instatrac" moniker was introduced, but it may have been '06....AWD engages quicker. There was a facelift in '05 I believe. And somewhere in there you can get better headlights that pivot. Ohhh! And screens in the rear headrests! Must have!

At this point, the tranny only causes problems at low speeds when in traffic. If I use the tiptronic manual shifting option it will shift fine. I may just do this for the time being until I decide to do something further.

No issues with the AWD system at all.

Cosmetically the side marker lamps were giving me a problem but I just used a clear caulking to make them stay on better. (don't worry, when I need to replace the light simple fishing line will allow me to remove them no problem)

Other than this, I also ran into the Idle Hunting issue but quickly realized this was an easy fix. Cleaning the ETC - (electronic throttle control) will fix this problem. Also known as ETM Electronic Throttle Module

You can find a simple Youtube video on how to do this.

The early p2 like yours had issues with the valve bodies. There is an updated valve body and harness. Slips and clunks were the common complaint. I assume you have the latest software in the tcm.

Good site dedicated to the XC's.

http://www.volvoxc.com/

Good starting point for the 2nd gen transmissions is to change the fluid out. Either a few drain and fills or this.

Forgot to mention this, we used to own an 02 V70 AWD and had the valve body done. Out trans wasn't slipping like Davey's is, just had a big delay between P-R and N-D. Was like an exaggerated version of the stupid pause that Volvo "designed" in and later programmed out of everyone's transmission's (at the owner's expense, of course).
