You don't even have to look...you trip over them. I'd be willing to bet there are 3 or 4 at PYP right now and I haven't been out there for 2 weeks...

Well...the actual transmission is the same. The rest may not be. If you're looking specifically for an M46, there are lots. If you're looking for a complete 740 set-up to do a swap, maybe not so plentiful.

I was responding more the the M46 because that's just a transmission...

This isn't something that'll be handed to you on a silver platter...

Ask Viktor. Ask Roger. Ask me. We've all done or will be doing a swap like you're talking about and have sourced what we need from the wrecker. Perhaps the only thing bought new was a clutch kit.

One thing you're going to learn, if you haven't already, is that modding Volvos isn't like modding Hondas or Subarus. You just can't buy "kits". There is no aftermarket for Volvo performance (relatively speaking) so save a few independent guys who offer one or two products, if you want to do something, you're on your own. I'm not saying there isn't any support in terms of advice or encouragement but you're going to get the same answer when it comes to many things. "I got one machined at a local shop" or "order one in from Sweden because nobody in North America sells it" or "figure out what you need and see what you can find at the wrecker that's close and make it work". I'm sure there are some other "canned" answers but the end result is the same. If you want to mod Volvos, be prepared to do a ton of legwork. Been there, done that...

The vast majority if not all the m46s you'll find at Pick 'n Pull will be older ones with J type Laycock overdrives. For your car you'll want a newer one with the more robust P type laycock on it. I'm not sure what year they started putting those in but it's probably around 1988 or '89. Those puppies are much harder to find.

Then you'll need to get the correct flywheel for your car. If your car has a crank position sensor then you'll need to make sure you get a flywheel with the correct number of holes in it. Could be tricky to find one of those for your car too.

Good luck with your search,

Roger
