AW-71L with a 4.10 works well with an A-cam in an N/A car. Even a T is still a nice little improvement in a 240 or late 940 N/A.

This is a B23ET with 398 head, right? A-cam in B23ET produces basically the same shape power curve as a T in an FT is what I found. T is almost too much of a stump puller in that engine and makes it more likely to ping. Never the less, I liked the T in it well enough, but it really would make it run out of breath much more so than a T does in a B21FTi or 23FT even.

4.10 axle is nice in an auto car, turbo or N/A, N/A especially. I'm looking for a good AW-71L, 4.10 locker and 15" steelies for the 1993 244 to round it out nicely. My cop car had the shift kit and higher stall converter and 4.10, which was nice, but fuel econ was never that great. Not terrible with tight squish though for an old k-jet B21FT. I'd get 18-24ish and get 22 usMPG most of the time. It got 15ish when I got it.

Try to find a 1993 and later trans without the tailshaft bushing if you can since driving the speedo isn't required. Late 93+ AW-71s and 71Ls are quite stout. I'd just try to find a 1993+ 940 N/A parts car and switch axle and trans as a unit. Shift kit and possibly AW-72L converter (higher stall) would be nice, but changing the axle and trans make a real nice difference in pickup over a tired AW-70L/3.73. Do you still have the AW from your 245ti? I've had some fun playing with autos since becoming a lazy automagic driver.

It's a 405 head and ported 90+ manifold. Don't know how much, if any, port work was done on the head. Athal or Matt can answer that. This thing revs 2000 at 100km/h. Is that 3.73 gearing? Seems a little taller than that to me.

I've got a couple of T cams and a bunch of A cams so I can play with cams a bit. This tranny wants to shift before 5000 no matter how hard my foot is into it so a T cam probably wouldn't slow me down a lot...

smoothed out the ports, cleaned up casting marks, polished the chambers, that was bout it. well, 3 angle grind, all new valves, seals, etc etc etc.

2000rpm at 100kph? that is SUPAH low, must be 3.31.

I would recommend starting with the A cam. If you really feel its not enough low end, you can go to the T, but I think the T will just be harder on the tranny and require higher grade fuel. What octane are you using now? I think I said before but it ran great at 8psi on 87.

I should ammend my thoughts on the cam. Without knowing how much the head is surfaced, block is surfaced, chambers opened/worked, piston deck heights and a whole lot else, and at calgary elevation, a T might be pretty decent.

Near sea level on my car with the thin HG and 398 head, T was more stump puller than was necessary.

Depending on tire size and speedometer accuracy, that is a tallish axle car, but stock should be a 3.73.

Speedo reads between 5 and 10% fast. I believe 100km/h indicated is actually about 95 by the GPS in my BB. Tires are 215/45/17...

the head is pretty mildly worked, surfaced maybe 0.010" though I can't remember the actual number. Block was decked so the pistons are about 5 thou out of the bore leading to ~0.045" squish depending who's number you use for the HG thickness. Final CR ended up around 9.1-9.2:1

Woohoo! '91 740 at PnP with an AW70L tranny...which is now in the trunk of the 740. Fluid was dark but did not smell burnt. Half price weekend too...still cost $86. $30 core though when I return this piece of crap that's in the car now...

Hopefully that car was a turbo model...

Nope. Why? In fact it had a manual sunroof and no cruise which may be the first time I've seen that in a 740.

Hmmm...This car (my 740) did have the transmission replaced at some point so what you speculate is certainly a possibility. This car (the one I pulled the transmission from) had a beautiful black leather interior; even more odd.

I'm not hoping for the moon here. What I mainly want is a car that will shift normally under reasonable acceleration. Ask Matt how the current transmission shifts...

Well it's in. Took it for a drive tonight and it's going to be so nice to drive the car without worrying about if/when/how it's going to shift. Shifts smoothly, quickly and no dramatics. Even tried it under full power and it seems to handle it; not that I will do that too often but it's nice to know it'll survive. Stereo, lumbar support and, at some point, full poly bushings and it should be good for a while...as long as I don't break something... [-o<

Nice wheels!
Just out off topic a bit you mentioned your 960 timing belt was 10,000 over?
The early 960 had a problem with skinny timing belts that had to be replaced more frequently than manual suggested, unless a damper (volvo recall) was added behind top right timing gear .
You can easily check if damper is present by removing top plastic cover over timing belt if both those top gears identical then its not there and don't hesitate to replace belt.

That 960 is long gone. It blew a headgasket and in the process one of the bolts broke off in the block. It was deemed to be too much trouble to fix, and was parted out.
