Basically using the Kinect game hardware as a shockingly accurate scanner.

Thoughts? It all seems very futuristic to a guy who has never bought a CD and has no cell. ;)

Yup - very cool...I've got a laser scanner in my lab that does this at micron resolution. Hardly ever gets used and I can't recall how to use it most of the time.
