The 544 is all apart right now, needs left front fender and windshield if anyone can help. Already have IPD poly bushings all around and new brake lines, still needs rebuild on master and wheel cylinders. Pic is me in 1973, bought car in 1970.
My 740GLE is a rare turbo-diesel (so I've been told, apparently only 1200 made it over here with most going to the States in 1986 only). It's in quite good shape for 223,000km, uses no oil and gets 40mpg hiway, 30mpg city in warmer weather, around the 0 degree mark and up actually. 5 speed w o/d, cruise, air, p/w, p/l etc. Very nice car. Bought it in 2005 (when I took these pictures) for 1000 with just installed $300 sony 10 disc changer in it. Was quite pleased. Have been fixing it up using a $200 parts car which is also in quite nice shape except B23 engine won't run. Son thinks it's something simple and wants to stick engine into 544. Hope you enjoy pics and if you have parts for 544 mentioned above, please let me know on sales board.

Hey, great to see a hunch back kicking around. I don't think anyone on this board has a 544 that they are willing to part, but you can check with the Volvo Club of BC - a bunch of them have 544's and will know who's got a stash of bits.

welcome! two very cool, and pretty unique cars! I don't know anyone who's had their car for THAT long! We just sent off my dads 245 to be recycled- i sold it to him, my parents gave it to me, and they bought it off my uncle who bought it brand new from valentine in 1981. Your PV takes the cake!

Welcome to CVC. Good to see someone keeping the much maligned TD on the road. I thought we were doing good keeping our 86 740 since new, looks like we have a ways to go... Hope you can get the PV back on the road, they are a really unique car.

Welcome aforum!

Your picture in the PV544 is a real blast from the past, that's pretty awesome! Did you expect to keep it for soo long? Good on ya! 8)

Interesting info on the TD... How does it perform in the cold weather!? I met a guy at PnP (Edmonton) over Summer who had one and loved it. A couple of months ago I also saw a blue sedan in the parking lot; I'm guessing it was the same guy.

No block heater in 740TD but does start down to -20 but takes a few times to get it to keep alive. Once running it seems to thrive on cold weather, more power and lots of heat. Love the car but need to find some kind of block heater for it. Son suggested oil pan heater. Haven't really looked at it since I only can't use it -20 and lower. We have another car for below that temp so the TD just sits til it gets up into the minus teens again. Love the car tho, it's really classy.

Yeah, sorry, I didn't answer the question about the PV544. After driving the 544 for 14 years, I couldn't part with it. It was just too much fun to drive but I realize it will be easier to modify it a little so it will accept the modern gas without having to carry around octane booster. My kids and oldest grandson all want it so I told them that whoever does the most work on it gets it. I'm leaving it up to them although I want to work on it also and drive it again when done. Might just end up as a semi restored beater, who knows.

Welcome, Welcome to our online community
Great to have another southerner join the group
I like your "fleet" especially the 544, always have had a soft spot for that model.

Rockmonton, thanks for the offer, I'll keep you in mind. Actually I could use a speedo cluster if you have one. My gears strippped so I drove the last 4 years on the tach but no mileage racking up to prove my point, stuck on 00000. I pushed the trip odometer when odo went to 00000 and that was that. Cool if you've got one, I can send away and get it rebuilt but I'm running out of arms and legs for payment.

Thanks to you all for your welcome. I asked Canadian V club if there was a western club between Ont and Van but they said no. Imagine my surprise and delight when I found youse guys. Hope there are gatherings of some type coming up, will be glad to get to know some of you, even the guy with the Ford engine, ha,ha. (Actually I was considering a transplant myself if TD goes south.) It runs well though and should last a while I hope. Diesels make such a racket outside the car that sometimes I wonder if it isn't about to blow.

We do have gatherings every so often, but an event I never miss is Street Wheelers weekend in Lethbridge. As "The Ford engine guy" (lol) I am there every year and we are hoping to have a larger group attend this year and I hope you will be able to join us. =D>

If you ever make it up to Calgary let us know, we can always arrange a pizza night.

Welcome to the forum. I suspect you may have some luck finding a block heater at a VW parts place. The Volvo D24 is simply a VW 1.6L diesel engine with 2 extra cylinders stuck on the end. The Audi diesel of the same vintage was the same but with only 1 extra cylinder.

http://www.partsplaceinc.com/products/p ... x?sku=3710

Looks an awful lot like a standard Volvo block heater but the bore is likely different...

Rockmonton, thanks for the offer again, I'm not sure that speedo would work. They look the same but Volvo changed the tranny and rear end when they went to the B18 from the B16 which would be in the 1960 so the gearing in the speedo could be different also. I'll check around and see if I can come up with some answers and get back to you.
