Well it's running and it took very little to get it going. I took out the plugs a couple of days ago and shot some PB Blaster followed by a few squirts of some old 10W40 I had kicking around in each cylinder. Turned over by hand and left it sit. I pulled the plugs today, buffed them up, gapped them properly and reinstalled. I'm saving my new plugs for after I get done Seafoaming etc. I installed the new wires and my new battery, left the distributor as is. Turned the key and it fired immediately, runs fairly smooth although it's got a bit of a tick to it. Backed it out on to the street and rolled a couple hundred feet, then reversed back to the house, seems to shift Ok (for the little bit I did). The brakes feel kinda spongy, will have to look at this some more. Also going to have to figure out where the smoking under the hood is coming from. Appeared to be around the turbo, might be left over grunge I couldn't get to down under but I have a feeling it's the turbo, although I thought it was coming around the plugs too?
Also got the new angle grinder out and cut out a window around the worst part of the rocker panel. From what I can see the inner rocker and center support look pretty good. There is a tiny bit of surface rust quite clean actually, but no bubbling and definitely not as bad as the rust on the bottom of the doors. I'm no expert but I think they should be Ok if the outer rocker gets patched. Craig, I might have you look at it before I go to far with welding a patch in to the window I cut to confirm it's going to be OK to repair just the outer section.
One last thing, changing the oil filter has now become the least favorite car we have for this. The 86 GLE couldn't be easier, the turbo could be worse but I haven't had a car yet that is. Any tips other than having a hoist so you can stand out of the way when the oil splashes out at you when the filter drops off? Other that that I am very pleased, tons left to do obviously, getting it going that easily put a smile on my face.
