So I'm digging around in a PnP car assessing the condition of a dashboard, pop a blank cover off by the centre vents & lo & behold there is an oil temperature gauge there.

That's a neat little feature & I'd like it in my GLT... Looks pretty straightforward, needs 12v, a ground and a lead to a thermistor of some sort. The only real questions I have are 1) where to mount the thermistor and 2) what resistance the thermistor should be ? A quick scan of my Haynes manual tells me nothing.

Thanks in advance,

Chris.

The stock oil temperature sending unit is in the oil drain plug. It's actually a totally different plug. I don't know if they're still available. Some industrious people drill a hole in the stock plug, tap it and thread in a VW temperature sending unit. Others have drilled a hole in the side of the pan and welded a boss there. Egauges.com might have the correct sender if you know what the thread on the drain plug is. I don't...

Interesting. My first thought is that I should go back to where I got it from & see if the sender is still there, now that I know what I'm looking for.

They look like this...

What happens quite often is the spade breaks off so the sender is useless. I suspect this is what has happened so they covered the gauge up...

The VW sensor will thread into several of the oil gallery locations - there's one at the front of the main oil gallery, right at the front of the block. This is where my turbo is fed from (+T) and would make a fine location for the sender if you can't find the Volvo one. Electronically the VW and Volvo sensors are a match, I believe.

I think you've got the water temp sender there, Dale, but it's close enough to show the general idea.
