Does Volvo use something like this, could be called an "inertia switch" to shut off pump in the event of accident?? If so, Where would that be located on say,240 series cars? Just wondering before I go out and get one. Alex.

I haven't owned one newer than an '82, but it would surprise me if even the newest ones had a switch like that.

So, I went to P&P and pulled one from 90's mustang, not much to it actually just a little switch with a reset button on top. I am surprised that Volvo, what with all their safety stuff, didnt incorporate one into the wiring somewhere ??

Inertia switches were first introduced in domestic cars when they switched over to EFI. Many of these cars used the same basic wiring harness as the carburetted version and there were some where in an accident the fuel pump would continue to operate, hence the installation of the inertia switch. We ran into more problems with cars going dead after hitting bumps, pot holes or railway tracks because of the inerita switch triggering. also many cars tended to hide the inertia switch making it hard for the owner to reset themselves. With computer advancement the fuel pump usually stop working as soon at the engine stops running.
