No I haven't determined what year it came out of, however, even if it does not have the holes drilled in the block for the sensor, which is why I assume you're asking the year of the block, I assume it won't be all too bad to drill and tap my own holes, as long as it's in the same spot right?

It shouldn't be difficult to add the holes to the block or the bellhousing as the case may be - I've never really looked at an LH 2.4 power unit myself, though I'm pretty sure the bellhousing gets nibbled out to accept the sensor. Best thing to do is actually look at your '90 engine/transmssion to see how that sensor sits.

I was asking about the block because the '85-mid '88 blocks are seriously weak, mid '88 to mid '89 (blocks with a "K" embossed on the intake side, at about cylinder #2) are mildly better, and '90+ are much stronger (almost as strong as a B21/B23). All B230s have some piston slap, until they installed piston squirters in whatever year that happened ('93?), so if your '90 was only making a light knock when cold and then was quieter when it warmed up, it probably didn't need to get pulled.

Yeah i had read a decent amount about the piston slap, but this was a pretty constant heave KNOCK..and it sounded horrible..it did go away at higher rpm's than idle, leading me to think it was fuel pressure related, but either way, I found the engine I swapped it with in a running car which had a salvage title that sounded and ran fantastic..I figured I would put that in and rebuild the other block which only has 100k miles on it and have a spare so if this engine does turn out to be weak it won't be too bad since I'll have an extra..i'll have to go check though to see what year it is. Also, is the flywheel I am looking for a "flat" flywheel or is it a stepdown?

sorry not fuel pressure, I meant oil pressure!

Yeah, a strong knock at idle is either a pin bushing or a rod bearing. I've heard a couple spun rod bearings and they hammer pretty hard no matter the RPM, so I bet yours was a pin bushing. Hope so, anyway, 'cause a spun rod bearing can warp a crankshaft pretty good.

All LH 2.4 flywheels are stepped, but not all stepped flywheels work with LH 2.4. No flat flywheels have been installed in 2.4 cars, from what I can tell, but if you've got access to a milling machine you can make a flat flywheel work. To make matters a bit more complicated, there were certain non-turbo cars that came with another type of fuel injection that used a flywheel trigger like the LH 2.4 cars did, but they have different number of holes - 48 minus 1, I think, instead of the 60 minus 2 of the LH 2.4

Ok so if I say that I want a stepped, 60-2, lh2.4 flywheel out of a 1990 740turbo car I should be getting the correct flywheel right? What diameter clutch rides on this flywheel? Do I need a different clutch for stepped vs flat flywheels? Sorry for all the questions, just trying to make sure I can order all the stuff in one shot....also, is the engine from the 85 car, (which does not have the rpm sensor on it) have a stepped or flat flywheel? Thanks again for all the help!

Generalization warning:

All factory intercooled 240s, plus all 700s (and euro 900s) turbocharged or not, with M46 and M47 transmissions, came with the 9" clutch on a stepped flywheel. I'm not sure if manual transmission equipped 240s after 1985 came with the stepped flywheel and 9" clutch or not, but all non-turbo 240s before 1985 and all non-intercooled 240 Turbos came with the 8.5" clutch on a flat flywheel.

As far as a flywheel goes, you don't need to specify 1990 Turbo only - it can be 1990-1993, and I believe most non-turbos had the same flywheel, but some are not be compatable with LH 2.4 They can count the holes if they're unsure - if there's 58 holes along the radius of the flywheel (right beside the starter teeth), it's the right one. The clutch can be used from any 1985-1993 740 turbo, or intercooled ('84.5-'85) 240 Turbo.

Wow..thanks alot, that really clears up what I'm looking for, I think I will try and order one tomorrow..and pull my engine back out, remount the rpm sensor, and await my flywheel! I'm sure I"ll have more questions soon, but thanks again!

does anyone here have any suggestions on where I can get one of these flywheels? I have called 6 or 7 different "volvo yards" but no one seems to have anything, where are you guys all getting these crazy parts!
