ABS for the lose? Really? I love mine on the 740, but that might be 'cause it's an M46 car.

I'm going to have to figure out how to add a toggle switch to turn it off for the summer, though.

That was an idea of mine, is it a switched power source for the ABS? Like, does it have its own fuse? (I assume so)

I like my ABS too. I dislike it in the dry...definitely a lot too conservative. On ice it might take a smidge longer to stop (it takes a while on ice/compacted snow anyway), but I can mash the pedal and steer. A toggle wouldn't be a bad idea...I usually yank the fuse in the summer.

The manual gearbox feels much easier to control to me in the 940. Still, the POS beige 245 with a stick and factory LSD would be the snow beater of choice.

ABS in the right hands can be a good thing. Where it gets scary is when you get idiots driving their million dollar SUV's with ABS and traction control. They really have no idea how to drive and just let the electronics deal with it...until they get into a situation where the electronics can't control sufficiently. Then, not only do they take out their own vehicle, they usually take out two or three others as well...

I got quite accustomed to the ABS in the Suburban last winter and usually let it do its thing, knowing I actually still had control of the vehicle...

So, yes...ABS ftl...in the wrong hands...

Yeah, if you're used to being without ABS, the toughest thing to do is keep your foot on the brake pedal and not modulate it. Remembering to steer & trust the ABS is the key.

Today, going way too fast on Edmonton trail, I had to stop pretty fast, and i floored the brakes, the ABS of course started flapping and yapping, so I forced it into 1st and put the E-brake on... which actually slowed me down enough, and saved me - ABS ftl.

This was in the work van actually.. which just has really underpowered rear brakes and these days a 70/30 rear bias in weight so you REALLY gotta help it :D

and no, 1st + abs + e-brake was still not enough to lock the rear tires

ABS is supposed to suck :)

5900 lbs of underpowered under-tired under-brakes'd work van with me foot to floor on abs, e-brake and yanking gear lever into 1 ... still didn't stop as fast as I'm sure just locking all four up (Michelin X-ice) would've done.. :)

We definitely have a difference of opinion. I challenge you to measure it. The only situation that ABS does not stop in a shorter distance is in gravel. The only reason is that when you lock all 4 up on gravel, it actually creates piles of gravel in front of the wheels...

So...on the same slippery piece of road, measure your stopping distance. One with ABS engaged and one with the fuse pulled and all 4 locked up. ABS just feels like it's taking longer to stop because of all the weird stuff happening under your braking foot...

Yes the TC in the Lex is great. I can't even get it sideways when its on, it gets about 6" out ofshape then just striaghtens out (great for the wife).

The only time it doesnt work so well is in very deep snow when you need to rock it back and forth and spin the tires, then you have to shut it off.

Ohh and ABS has saved me a few times already this year. It feels wierd but it works.

Hey guys!

I'm still around just really busy. Yes the truck takes up alot of time but I still have thoughts of owning a 242 someday.

On a side note I'm married again and loving it. Way better the second time around!

See ya all around.

months back!!!

to add to Dale's gravel talk...what about snow piling up in front of you? does that not happen or?

i won't argue that ABS can make braking easier, i just don't like it, as you said, all the weird shit going on under your feet, it freaks me out

ciao

Snow can do the same thing as gravel, but snow has to be REALLY deep to aid braking.

I missed that post of Tyler's. I'd noticed he'd been posting more lately... Congrats, Tyler, and welcome back!
