Here's the latest but of fun. After taking a couple of rides in Dale's beast, I was convinced that big brakes are the way to go with my 122. I've been racking my brain trying to figure out what all the different calipers on Wilwood's site are and their differences, but now need a little advice.

Let's start at the begining. First off, I've got an old set of used Billet Dynalites that are destined for the Jag, and a spare 11" Jag rotor (same bolt spacing as the 122 - very helpful). The stock brakes have a 10.5" rotor, so this will work for mock-up.

Image

My widened wheels made use of Chevy truck outer rims that are 14.5" in diameter on the inside and get to that diameter 1.25" off the mounting face for the wheel (they are designed to clear big truck brakes - lucky me). I didn't think that I could get an 11.75" rotor (one of Wilwood's standard sizes - and the smallest for say a Forged Superlite Caliper), but the more I looked at the drawings, the more I'm convinced that the radial distance from the centre of the wheel is only one variable (and it doesn't change that much for all the different calipers, Dynalite, DynaPro, Superlite are all around the same distance for radius). The biggest difference is in the width of the caliper, with the Dyna series being smaller than the Super series.

So I put my DynaLite's on the 11" rotor (cant use them as they are for a 3/8" thick rotor), and went a head with a test fit.

Here's the over head shot in the correct mounting position.

There appears to be lots of room and the Jag rotor is only 2" from back to front.

So I spaced the rotor 3/4 off the wheel (as the new calipers are going to be wider) and then spaced the caliper off the wheel 3/8" to simulate the 11.75" rotor.

Image

Still lots of room...I think. With the size of a FSL caliper (at about 5" wide on a 0.81" rotor) I will have about 1.5" of rotor overhanging the back side of my wheel. A Dynalite would be 0.75" narrower.

What am I missing? Am I on the right track?

Excellent - so my next step is to mock up a caliper (I'll build on with wood with the same external radius and thickness) then start sorting out the backspacing of the hat and rotor. Then if all goes well, I'll put the order in while the dollar's still at par.
