Does anyone know what spline an 83 240 has at the steering column u-joint? Specifically is it a (.735-36) spline u-joint? Or if anyone has a steering u joint laying around can you count the splines?

It did. I've got one buried in my parts supply, but I can't get to measuring it for a little while. By that time, Houston, you could certainly pull the shaft off your car and measure it. Heck, even between posting this thread and reading the replies you could have!

No biggie - I just found a guy who builds stock cars in Calgary and is going to assemble it for me. The steering turns will be decreased by 1.5!!

What is the rack travel and what is the cost? Is the rack gear similar to stock for width and can it be tapped on each end for the volvo tie-rod?

I think my parts car has the same wacky rack as John Lane's Rally car that has the 2.5 turn guts. It is the biggest POS '84 245, but runs incredibly well and has ok steering feel. Pity it is a manual...no flat top piston B23F.

I think Houston's going the steering quickener route, not a custom rack.

This is the link: http://www.howeracing.com/Steering/Inde ... tealth.htm

It gets placed on either end of the steering column - i am putting it right after the steering wheel hub, and bolting it to the support in the dash. A lot of stock cars do the same thing and they take a massive amount of punishment. A few of the VW rally cars have them as well - really a time saver and much safer in winter conditions when the tail gets out of hand....
