I've been planning on getting the chrome redone on the car this year. I figured before I send the parts out and get a little poorer, why not customize a few more things?

I have never liked the front bumper on the car. All 122's have a Euro plate sized cutout, and I don't have a Euro plate or any desire to run a front plate. So here's my solution.

Start point - ugly cut out.

I must have some bumper parts in my pile of bits parts somewhere.

Here's what I came up with, a spare set of front bumper ends were reduced to this. I know that the sides look like they are not lined up given the holes...but I'm matching the curvature, not the holes.

Image

Then fill the bumper bolt holes.

Image

Then a bunch more welding and fitting and we're back on the car. I've run out of sheilding gas, so I'm moving onto the billet grills this afternoon.

Here's the final shots, note the even reflection on the bumber.

From above - it was fun to get the 3-D curves all correct.

From the side.

I can't decide if you've got too much time or your imagination is too active... :P

Probably a little of both. I got it ground down and it looks great. I'll need to do some filling with the welder when I get a new tank of gas. No body filler allowed on this job! The grills are now roughed in as well. I'm probably not going to get it all out for chroming this week, but by the end of next weekend I hope to have it all done.

Overriders are staying...I'm thinking about shaving the outer bumper bolts. I'll decide tomorow - will probably do it to try to keep the bumpers looking as clean as possible. Then it is on to the rear bumper. Not much work to do there, just shaving the bolts. I have to find my good set of rear overriders -they've got to be in a box somewhere.

I've only got 6-7 hours in the front bumper...that's not that long. Just wait until I unvail what I'm getting up to under the hood - 2 years of polishing, plating, powder coating all starting to come together.

I got a good 4 hours in on the billet grills this afternoon. They are starting to look pretty good. All hand work - no power tools on that project.

But seriously, I'm occasionally glad my wife is away for weeks at a time - it gives me guilt-free time in the garage and as a side bonus, the dogs get tired out playing in the yard and swiping tools from the garage (the younger dog has started to take any tools I leave around under the car out into the yard - brat).
