so i finally found a mint rear gate off a 85 240 wagon to replace the rusted out crap on my 87, it has absoloutley no rust which is what i wanted and was lucky enough to find in the p+p. only problem is the glass is broken, so i figure i can replace it with the glass thats in the current gate, ive got the rubber trim off the new gate and ready for the glass. it looks to me like i just stretch it over the glass and tap it into the gate with a rubber mallet? correct me if im wrong... but how do i get the glass out of my crap gate? any tips or tricks to doing this??

thanks

alex

If you have two gaskets...then cut the lip off the one in the car and it will fall out. You could work it around with a scraper (wide) and force it over the edge - the glass will take more force than you think.

I've pulled out two recently, and both times I just pulled the trim off, and pryed back the gasket with a screwdriver. Considering you don't care about the paint, this will be easy. Once you have the one screwdriver in, pry another one in, and work your way slowly across the top, down one side, to the bottom. By then it will pop out. Couple minutes at most.

Or just cut it like Craig said!

put a length of string/ twine or similar around the track of your seal that fits over the window opening...then it helps if you have help.....insert the two ends of the string inside the hatch...have someone apply a little pressure to the glass as you pull the string inside, this pulls the seal over the flange. I would not hit it with a mallet
