AND there was a bit of me puttin around the city on that trip too!

Miss Viv is oddly loving the warmer weather and is very happy lately. :)

That is very good, but I think you have to give Paul a little bit of the credit.
I am sure some of the work he did helped a bit

Absolutely Paul deserves some credit, but driving habits influence mileage STRONGLY. Good on ya for the economy run, Kat! Keep it up!

Yes, Volvos like warmer weather. All cars like warmer weather - carburated cars don't seem to care as much if properly tuned, but fuel injected cars go crazy when the weather is cold.

My best was in my '91 Passat, strangely enough for a "full size" Volkswagen: 7.1 l/100km. With a 70 litre tank, it would just about get me to Vancouver from Calgary if I drove it nicely. What a great car.

LOL for sure, Paul and Brad and all the other lads over at B&Js get my love and baked goods ;)

I just love though how I'm blowing some of the OT skulkers minds..."your car gets better mileage when it's warm? IT SHOULD BE BETTER WHEN ITS COLD!" lol

As far as driving habits goes though Matt, they haven't changed really. Just set the cruise for 120 and away I go. And there was a bit of more aggressive driving on tha tank too...but shh. I daresay I could have averaged 7.8 or less if I behaved a bit more. (especially since it was reading 7.8 at some points mwahaha)

242 gets around 10l/100 km. The beetle kicks all numbers posted - around 4.8l/100 km on the highway and around 5.5l/100 km combined.

Thats real good for a turbo brick.

I did 8.7 in the cop car, which is rather amazing considering what it is...an automagic k-jet 244ti that I beat on pretty hard. That was mostly driving b-ham to p-town with a few fast passes. K-jet doesn't seem to mind cold much. Then again, I'm not using the thermal cut-out switch and am using a heated 02 in the winter, so it is basically like a carbed car with the CPR/cold start valve replacing the choke for the first bit of run time.

EFI on the other hand seems to think that the world is ending with the cold, especially if you drive the car at all hard. I don't really get it either...apart from getting the car to actually start and run smooth for the first few minutes, you shouldn't need to throw tons of fuel at it ALL the time to drive in the cold on a gas car.

Carburators actually vapourize the fuel a whole lot better than port fuel injectors do, especially when the intake is heated through one method or another. I could turn off the choke on my truck by the time I hit the bottom of the hill in the winter, but all my Megasquirt experience tells me that I need at least 20-50% enrichment, even to within 20-30* of operating temperature, for smooth warmup driving. The poorly atomized fuel sticks to cold port walls a whole lot more than the fuel coming out of a carburator sticks to the entire intake tract. EFI Volvos seem to lose about 20% mileage in my driving during the winter, and I'm really gentle on them & avoid unnecessary idling. Same goes with my truck, and Roberta's 850.
