The good news i have a Volvo 626 Bertone that is really mint has the b21ft with IBS very nice little engine. Bad news head was making very bad sound has been removed to discover one of the exhaust valve seats had come loose.

Ok now the really bad news the machinist said he would do the head but because of the valve seat issue he will not give any warranty and recommends selling the car immediately after the rebuild. First off i am not that type of person.

Second why would i want to spend $600.00 to have a head mostly not fixed plus the money i already have in parts labor and the like. Then just to sell it and have it blow up later to much bad karma for me to live with.

ANYWAYS I would like to get a new/remanufactured head or even a decent old head that i could use to rebuild. Where do i find one for the b21 IBS turbo? is it the same head as the NA i have some casting numbers I took off the head see below

PLEASE SOMEONE HELP

Why? Would do no good whatsoever since the B21FT is not the original engine in that car. I presume the OP is talking about a 262, not a 626. I have no idea what is meant by IBS. The original engine would be the PRV6. What year is the car?

It's pretty simple really. He needs a 398 head with k-jet injector holes. 398 heads are not terribly difficult to find although true turbo 398 heads with sodium filled exhaust valves might be a little tougher to find. I've got one in my garage but it's still attached to the engine and a member asked for it a few month ago. I'm sure there are plenty around. Many people run them without the sodium-filled valves with no issues. If you're worried about running it without the sodium-filled valves, you could always swap the valves over from your old head if they're not damaged.

There are LOTS of turbo engines running around without the sodium valves, in high performance applications too. I've done it, and that head was on two different turbo engines, both of which I FLOGGED so I know it can be done. There's no other difference between the B21FT and the B21F heads besides the exhaust valves, and the exhaust valves aren't worth worrying about IMHO.

Like Dale, I have no idea what IBS means - never heard that TLA before.

But Dale's right - you're looking for a head from a 1978-1980 B21F, 1983 B23E, or a 1981 -1985 B21FT in the junkyard. Not terribly difficult to find, but not that common anymore either. I haven't got one, only a spare 530 which doesn't have injector holes. We're out in the JY every week or so, so we can let you know what's out there.

IBS stands for inter cooled boost system you have a head? please sell to me hehehe also all the valves are OK in the old head except the one that seat fell out of and i have a brand new sodium filled one to replace it with.

Do you recommend machining the head before putting it back on my engine when i find a old/new one? would you for the one in your garage? or just slap her on and hope for the best?

Really a b23E? oh that must be how they get the high compression version or something? If you find something i would be willing to pay how much does a junker head go for these days?

The compression is gained or lost in the piston design. The cylinder head contributes very little. I would assume the 398 head from an '83 GLT with B23E is the exact same head as the 398 in an '85 B21FT. Pick n Pull charges something like $50 for a head.

Interesting...where does that come from? I've never heard the term IBS before.

The head in my garage is still on the engine. It was pulled from a car I sent to the crusher and it ran fine when it was extracted from the car. I don't see any reason to do anything to it but that's because I know it's good. Pulling a head from a car at the wrecker is quite another story. You really don't know why the car is there so it's always a good idea to have it refreshed.

I need to check with the member that was talking to me about the engine before I commit to selling the head from it...

I've heard of the IBS before, old volvo dealer literature- back when the IBS could be added at the dealership to non-intercooled cars.

I have a 398 head in my garage I have no use for. I believe it's got the sodium valves in it. Take it away and leave a donation if you like. I would at a minimum spend a few bucks getting it cleaned, inspected, decked and valve guides checked and replaced if nothing else. having the valve seats ground is worthwhile, though requires new exhaust valves (can't grind sodium valves).

I'm also running standard valves (about 1/4 the price of sodium ones) in my turbo car, several years with no issues.

your right anything older than 2000 lasts maybe 2 days and goes to the squisher.
I have a guy that goes every monday and tuesday for parts and they are cleaning out old inventory like crazy.

If that's the case they might as well not even have an import section. They have maybe 6 cars that are newer than 2000my, all Korean.
