Hi Everyone,

I currently have 4 Gislaved tires on my 1998 S70 which have been very good to me. The 2 front tires need to be replaced and wondering where in Calgary I might find these tires? Does anyone have info or a contact?

Thanks in advance.

Tire Trends out of BC has Gislaved. I have access through work. They have a TireRack/1010- type site with retail pricing, in case you see them, let me know by PM, and I'll get you a better price. But yeah, they are superceded, and the last season, *everything* sold out, so I don't hold much hope

I ran the Gislaved for many years on my Volvo's, then switched to Nokian Hakkapeliitta studded, the traction is unbelievable. I would recommend them as the best winter tire available.

Hi everyone,
Thank you for you advice.
I just returned from purchasing a set of 4 Gislaved Nord Frost
185- 65 - R15 m+s tires with 95% tread on steel 4 bolt rims. The tires are exactly the same as the currently on my car. Since my car has 5 bolt rims and the set I purchased has 4 bolt rims, I will not be needing the 4 bolt set steel rims.

Does anyone want the 4 bolt volvo rims for free once I get the tires changed over? Update - 4 bolt rims are gone

I'm cheap.

300 dollars for four new tires is OK though (studded!)

If these are 4 bolt would that make them FWD offset from an S40 or similar? Too bad I could use a set of 15" steelies in a 5 bolt RWD offset.

I take it from Nokian's website that Kal Tire is the exclusive retailer for their tires?

Thought I would add something to this thread based on some winter tire research I have been doing lately. As some of you may know Continental now owns Gislaved as well as General. The interesting thing that I found that came out of this merger is the General Altimax Arctic winter tire which is an exact copy of the old NF3. Granted the NF3 is now old technology but it was top of the line in it's day. The old General Grabber's i've had on p/u's from the factory were shit, but that was years ago and before the merger.

In a 185/65-15 the Generals run around $115 so pretty inexpensive for a decent tire with a lesser name on the sidewall. I am tempted to try a set this winter from 1010tires.com as they have free shipping coming up next week. For ~ the same price CT sells them as well if you can deal with their installation or just take them somewhere else for mounting. Edit: Just looked on Tiretrends.com and they have them for $96.95 in the quoted size with $11/tire shipping. FWIW the NF5's are only $105.95 so not alot more for the newest technology. :-k

Anyway thought I would throw that out for anyone wanting to stay with the NF3's or just looking for a sleeper premium winter tire for cheap.

It was only a few weeks ago I was doing research on what Winter tires to fit to the 242. Funnily enough, I decided (but have not yet bought) on the General Altimax Arctics. 8-[ They are reviewed quite highly and like you've mentioned, a nice price! (I've never had to deal with Winter tires before so my knowledge is slim).

I have one question though, I'm currently running 205/65 on the Virgos... would it be better to go for 185/65 Winters? 'Thinner' so cuts through the snow better?

Absolutely.

205/65 tires are the wrong size for your car anyway...too tall. Should be 195/60/15.

What Dale said, I am planning on the 185/65-15 for the 89 GL which came stock with that size but also for the 90 745Ti which has 205/55-16 as stock but will still be the same diameter. For winter tires skinny is better, less float in deep snow and less contact area to build a water film to skid on ice. Whichever tire you get I would recommend getting them studded as well.

If you have those 205/65's on the 15" Virgo's they must look like big black donuts? If you want to run a 205 on the 15's for summer a 205/55-15 would match up to the stock 195/60 and look a lot better as well. If you want to run sizes the tire size calculator on 1010tires.com is very handy.

I've been running 185/65/15 on the 940 but next time I'd go with 195's- the 185s get quite short when they wear. They're already 0.5" shorter than stock (195/65/15, 205/55/16).

FYI, my tire supplier has blizzak ws60 in stock at $111 and winterforce for $82. add tax and a case of beer.
