Hi all,

I've got this great, clean 122S that I really like. No rust. I've been keeping it in the garage and not driving it this winter, but I drove it a ton last summer. Do you guys take out your old cars that aren't beaters in the winter at all?

If the roads dry up in the next week I want to take it out, but I'm terrified of splashing through a puddle and letting it sit for a few months in my garage with salty Calgary water sitting on the underside. Am I being way too paranoid?

Also, how do you guys wash old cars? Just spray them down in the bays? Bucket and water in the driveway?

These might be stupid questions, but I'm new to old cars that I care about. My previous Volvo was a '68 142S that was already a bit rusty, so I drove it all year round and I wasn't worried about anything. Now I've got one that I want to drive, but I don't want to wreck it.

Make sense? Thanks.

I think you're wise not driving it in the winter. Unless the underside has been completely sealed up with rust protection there are far too many vulnerable areas. As far as washing, the spray wash works best in my opinion. But...it can also strip old, hardened undercoating off so one has to be careful. Bucket and rag in the driveway may get the shiny side clean but the underside needs to be well rinsed too...

I say leave it in the garage until the snow is gone and the puddles disappear.

I'm agree with Dale - unless you're willing to clean the underside really well, best leave it for fair weather. That said, if the roads are DRY, I'll drive the 122 in January.

I'm really planning on it. I love old Volvos, and new ones too I'm sure although I'm not very familiar with those.

Thanks,
Dustin
