I had one similar to that at the golf course. Worked fine for changing golf cart tires, but for something with a stiff low profile sidewall? Forget it.

I have one, they work well
There are a few tricks involved but I have used one for many year on many sizes.
Finally bought one and never did get it mounted properly, now I cannot be bothered.
Mine is for sale, want to buy it?

Just picked up my set of Dunlop Star Spec today. The side wall is so stiff that the tire guy struggled to get them on the rim with a very expensive tire machine. Have not used one of these manual one before. You may want to try to change a tire on them before buying. Don't forget you still have to take the tires to a shop for balancing.

^^^ Tire rookie LOL
Manual changers do work well, with stiff sidewalls use just use 2 bars rather than one.
Where manual changers don't work well is with aluminum wheels, you need plastic protectors to prevent damage.
Balancing at home is also easy, just buy one of these :D

Edit: Damn I should have used this as one of the Tools in the guess the tool thread

plus one for the tire rookie comment, I did 20+ inch wheels with low low profile tires while working at kal tire...of course I AM amazing but still...

this is going to be used for more practical tires, winter tires etc. so would def save money on the exchanging of rubber to wheels for different cars/bolt patterned wheels

:D The tool shown above is a bubble balancer. Before the days of electronics and computers this was the standard method for balancing tires. Although many will argue it is no where near as accurate and precise as the new computer balancers (and I would have to agree). If used properly the balance will be more that accurate enough for city and highway driving. The basic principal is to use a circular bubble level to identify the heavy side of the wheel. The device allows the tire/rim to balance on a central point, weight is added to the lighter side to balance the tire. This provides an accurate static balance, where as electronic balancers also calcualte dynamic balance which with todays wider rims is an important consideration.

Image

Ideally when adding the weight you divide the total weight needed by 4, from the lightest location you place 2 of the weight (1/2 the total amount) between 30-45 deg to the right and to the left of the light spot on the outer rim. The final 2 weights are placed on the inner rim directly opposite the outer weights.

.... and YES I have one of these also, but still use it.

Thank you for the info. I have used the static balancer back about 25 years ago on skinny 13" steelies, didn't know people still use them and there is a "home" version.

I feel smarter already. :D

I never did balance my winters for the GT, they were just too small to bother, also my rally gravel tires, just didnt care enough

also 70% of the weights on my truck wheels end up in the ditch anyway due to rough roads and 16" wheels barely clearing the brakes

bubble balancer sounds cool, I bet there's lots of items in this "groups" garages that other people would be like, oh man that's neat!
