Why are my wipers now stopping in the middle of my windshield instead of "parking" correctly? Is this a relay issue, or something more troubling?

I am not 100% sure on how the 240 wiper is set-up and wired, in general it could be relay, could be ground issue, could be the switch or could be within the wiper motor itself. I will see if I can find a wiring diagram ...

The relay is at the bottom of the interior firewall by the clutch pedal. Mine was rusted out and caused all kinds of grief (usually wouldn't shut off) from water leaking either past the windshield or one of the firewall grommets.

won't shut off is usually the relay.

Won't park or do intermittent is usually a tired motor or motor with the contacts worn in the park position. 1992 and later 240s got a much better motor and linkage. The late motor fits an early car. Much faster and quieter.

It was starting to make some noise. Greg noticed it when we were driving out to Jim's to inspect the 740 - then it started to behave weirdly. FCP I guess?

I dunno. I just look for a late car with a new volvo brand one on it (there are aftermarket ones and they are much of the suck). Being Portland or B-ham, it rains all the time and cars with near new used wiper motors are common enough to find a good one usually. I usually kept one in the past, but I'm mostly out of all things volvo.

FCP stocks the Scantech one...we don't get rain around here much, so most cars have the old motors in them.

should be at the yard this weekend, I'll grab one if there is a late 240.

I take it the 7-series ones don't fit? Their wipers are way better, faster, stronger.

This is an interesting thread as our oldest 740 does the stall thing even after I replaced the motor with a used one off another car, obviously they are both past their best before dates. I am pretty sure the 240 and 740 are not interchangeable as the 740 is a complete unit with the motor attached all under the cowl.

Craig, there was an 1987 240 at Airport PnP last time I was there although that was over a month ago now...

I haven't had a second to get out to the PYP, but I know the car. Athal, how'd your hunting go? Providing it doesn't rain soon (unlikely) then I could dash out this week and pull a motor.
