So, i went to install an avalanche b230 underdrive pulley and i noticed a couple of things:

1. I can't use my crank holdy tool anymore :(
Not the end of the world i suppose.. but i liked how easy life was with it.

2. There aren't any timing marks on it!
What have people done to mitigate this? Notch it manually?

1. You're right...on both counts...

2. We didn't put timing marks on them because of how far they are away from the pointer. Determine where you'll hold your timing light light and make a mark...

To elaborate: pull #1 spark plug and stick a chopstick down the hole. Holding the chopstick with one hand, rotate the engine until the chopstick comes out as much as it can, and starts to go back down. Back up and zero in on the point where you feel this is absolutely perfect - you should be able to feel the crank "lighten up" for that 1 or 2 thousandths of an inch where the pistons stop pushing on the rings and start pulling on them. Build a pointer that gets close to the pulley and set your TDC timing mark. You must use a dial-back timing light to make that mark worthwhile.

As Dale said, the decision was made to not include timing marks because there was no good reference mark to relate them to. Ideally we would have included a pointer and the timing scale on the pulley and even the shorter belts, but we were not able to R&D these things nor were we willing to.

Make sure the notch in the crankshaft and the boss in the pulley line up before you torque things down, though - if your belts don't line up or if you have pulley wobble, this is the problem.

Hmmmm... i see.

Well the idea i had was to just set up the timing with the stock crank, pull that off, put the underdrive on, and mark it in the same spot...

I see what you're saying about it being too far away from the stock markings.
