ok guys,

I have ViK's old 760, and after battery and alternator swaps was running great. Yesterday I drove it to work and everything ran fine, maybe seemed a little underpowered. Then on the way home I had a total losses of power and surging with a few backfire like pops.

I am doing a bunch of looking around on where to start diagnosis, can any of you guys point me to the right starting point

Turbo, ECU, Vac Leak, wet distributor, hall sensor :(

let me know

Is it LH 2.4? If so, run the diagnostics and count the blinking lights. Sort of sounds like a crank position sensor, though it could be many things.

Vik's old car is an '84, LH2.2 at best.

But yes, there are a lot of areas for you to check. Pull the electrical connector at the AMM and check for corrosion, and make sure it seats properly when you plug it back in. I've had running issues like yours and the AMM connector was the culprit. Next, pull the AMM and make sure the wires inside are still good. Grope the intercooler hoses good, make sure there are no splits or holes and nothing's come unseated from the IC or turbo nozzles. Check the idle control hoses too. Usually if a hose has noticeably failed the car flat won't run, so you might have a small hole or other flaw. Make sure your O2 sensor wiring hasn't melted against the downpipe, make sure your plug wires are seated properly, pop the distributor and look for fuzzy corrosion or other sins. When the hall sensor or the ignition modules fail, the car stops running, so you should be fine there. Check your grounds - there are a bunch and some are hidden. Dale chased a power problem for months and I believe it was a badly grounded ignition module, or something around there.

My money is on that AMM or AMM plug.

And mine is on a big leak somewhere in the intake...like a hose fell off somewhere...

Seems like two problems causing the power loss.

1st - a ground somewhere in the lighting chain. When i turn on the running lights it surges power on and off.
2nd- a broken bolt on the down-pipe flange directly after the turbo, causes the backfire type noises at the top of the boost pressure, but only under load

I am seeing some corrosion on the positive battery terminal, which I am sure is a part of the grounding issue. the fun part of that is it might be from ice racing it this winter and getting something wet on the last race.

I will keep hunting when time permits.
