Hello All,

I just started my J-Type OD rebuild this morning and discovered that the solenoid has a small piece of brass missing off the end (right at the front) and the O-ring behind the broken place has been erroded right behind the break. Leading me to believe that it is leaking at the missing chunk is causing a high-pressure leak.

I went to my local wrecker and they just smiled - no dice. I'm told that the solenoid off of the M46 in the 240/740 is a bolt on replacement (at least my parts guy won't just give me a funny look) - true? Anyone found a cheap source locally?

Cheers.
Craig

Hey Craig,
I've got a couple M-46's around here with the J-type. If you think it'll work, you're welcome to the solenoid off one of 'em.

Thanks Greg,

I'm still looking for a new one (but if e-bay fails) then I'll let you know.

Any hints for posting from the gallery?

The J type laycock on the m46s up to the late 80s (when they switched to P-type) are the same as what's on your J type M41. I wouldn't bother spending all that money for a new solenoid. Just go get a half decent used solenoid off an M46 and use it until it fails (if it ever does) and then go get another one. I've been driving J type Laycocks for 25 years in my two 240s and have NEVER had a solenoid fail on me once. They last forever just about so a good used one will last you a long, long time. Not worth the $ getting a new one if ya ask me.

Thanks for the tips Roj...I managed to score a new one on E-Bay the other day - so my solenoid woes should be over. Now if I could only get that V-Performance head and cam sent to me I'd have an outside chance of having the engine and transmission swap done for Streetwheelers in Lethbridge.
