Pretty quiet on this forum, so:

This spring when I got the 1800E out from sitting all winter in the garage, I found a trail of motor oil on the garage floor and a drip on the drain plug, and the dipstick showed 1/2 litre of oil gone. I had changed the oil and filter last fall and used a new OEM copper washer. Couldn't recall if I annealed the washer last fall, so I drained the oil and and installed a new freshly annealed OEM copper washer. The oil continued to drip when sitting, as it sat without running for another month this spring.

I didn't think oil could leak when the car is not running, i.e. sitting. Isn't most of the oil sitting in the oilpan below the level of the oilpan gasket?

No other leaks from the engine, Valve cover gasket, line to gauge, brass block and sender etc. all OK.

What could explain this?

Pinhole in oil pan, scratched sealing surface, dinged screw preventing contact with washer?

I’ll give it a closer inspection when I change the oil again.

Thanks.

I drop in once in a while, I expect I'll find another Volvo eventually!

(Actually this time I was spammed on my inbox and decided to have a look around  )
