Craig, its just a slightly larger version of the k-jet plugs on the side of the dist. Its got three metal prongs that stick out into the black plastic plug, which then connects to the harness.

Matt, the distributor I wrecked was originally one of yours, but if you have a second spare, I'd be mighty happy if I could borrow it until I find another. Or Dale...let me know if you'd be willing to part with the plug in yours. Its tricky to remove without breaking I suspect.

Edit: Matt is suggesting we swap. You up for it? Your replacement is polished!

Doesn't matter to me. MY distributor could care less if it has a plug on the side or not. The only condition I'll put on it is the car can stop running long enough to swap distributors.

Yep.

Sounds good Dale. We'll do a swap then sometime. No idea when...

Successful day in the garage today. Craig came by and got my e-brake pads installed, bent me up a couple front brake lines I needed, and then bled my brakes for me. Thanks Craig!

I've gotten the intercooler painted, and decided to start installing the front end. Wiring can still be done...it'll just be more of a pain. So the headlights are in, intercooler and rad/rad support are in, and I've got the coolant reservoir and all the coolant hoses on, with shiny new clamps.

After a look at the air box setup, and determining a 740 airbox won't fit, I think I've got something that should work. I pulled an '80 240 diesel airbox, and along with the 240 T intake hoses, and rotating the box sideways, and the square top of the box another turn, I should be able to mount the AMM right under the coolant bottle. Should work nicely, and look semi-stock. Good times ahead.

But wait! What's this then?

Image

That looks to be a 740T airbox in a 240 engine bay. Maybe I need to triple check this thing again....

Edit: I also seem to recall seeing Mr. Kleen's 240 engine bay running a 740 airbox. Can't find pics. Anyone confirm this?

I took the k-jet airbox and put it through the band-saw to make it LH2.2 turbo.

Cut the ventouri off it and then aluminum welded a pipe to the AMM and bracket for AMM. Works just like stock, fits a 240 chassis great. Paper filter, no vibration for the air mass, no hot air, no hacking on the car, looks completely uneventful like it belongs, flows as well as even a gigantic cone filter or better. I think I used a new-old-stock intake hose for a 740T and took that into account for how to place the AMM (ymmv) and used a 740 pierburg CBV adjusted pretty much to my liking with 240 turbo with 60 trim compressor machined in OE 240 compressor housing. A little hard to describe what I did precisely, but it basically replicates what the 740 one does in alum...boxed in with a pipe running and then turning 90 degrees and downward in essence.

Then again, I'm completely stodgy and boring. I'll only ever plate parts gold CAD, paint redblocks matching red, and make modifications that are near impossible to see or tell exist on the mechanical compromises of "modifications" as much as absolutely possible. No blue plug wires, polished overly shiny or chrome parts, or cone filters here!

Yep, no cone filters here, or that's the idea. Hadn't thought of using the 240T box James, but that's a good idea. Mind you, at this point we've already cut out the mounting surface for it, and Craig has fabricated a flat mounting surface with a hole out the side of the inner fender for the air feed. Should work okay I think. I tried mounting up the 740 box again, and yep, it would be a very tight squeeze to make it fit. That thing is HUGE! I'd have to cut all the mounting points from the bottom, fabricate a lift to make it sit higher, run a 740 reservoir bracket, and still the thing would run into the side of the intercooler and have a tough time clearing the intercooler piping. Not worth it I don't think. I think I'll try out this diesel one and see how that goes.

Weekend update.
I got the sway bars painted earlier in the week. One coat of POR, and two coats of POR engine enamel. I used a better brush for the enamel this time which helped, but I'm still not totally pleased with the finish. It will do.

Image

Got them installed on Saturday. Rear is a GT bar I believe. 22 or 23mm.

Image

Front is an IPD 25mm. All poly bushings.

Image

Details of the brakes.

Image
Image

Finally got around to test mounting the rear Epsilons. They fit and clear everything no problem.

Image
Image

Fronts are a different story. I had test fit them earlier, but tried again, and yep, they ain't gonna fit. The hub mounting surface on the front is smaller than the back, I believe 140mm. The actual mounting surface of the Epsilon is 155mm, so they hang over the edge and contact the inside of the brake caliper. Machining isn't a possibility, as there isn't enough material there to remove. Spacers? Not a good idea in the front, right?

At any rate, I bolted up some Virgos, and the car is on the ground for the first time in a long while. The underside is complete. Just wiring now.

Yee Freaking HA!

Poopy about the front wheels, but maybe it's time for an upgrade? I'm not sure if the 11.25" 740 front rotors plus RX-7 calipers would fit (spoke clearance), but they'd certainly move the caliper out of the way. I've got the calipers, would just need to do up some adapters and plug off some brake hoses.

There's really no room for machining? Seems crazy, that. Nurse, fetch me a picture of the back of the wheel, stat!

Nice progress Greg, don't envy you the wiring but it's moving towards the end. =D>

Hmmmm....brake upgrades. Yes, this is a good thing. Long term I was planning that anyways, but maybe it should happen sooner rather than later. I'll get a pic for you Matt, hopefully tomorrow. (my sewer backed up, so I'm too stressed from that). The edge of the hub on the wheel is only about a cm thick, and beyond that there's these machined voids in the hub.

Thanks Jim....yep, its getting closer to the end. Your car is getting towed this week BTW. I'll be sad to see her go.

Here's the pics. Looks like I lied...brake mounting surface is 150mm.

Image

Mounting surface of the wheel. 165mm. So to take 15mm off of that would mean cutting right into the blackened recessed areas. The edge of that lip digs right into the inside of the brake caliper. And the wheel doesn't dip much in after the lip, so I'm not sure the brake would clear anyways, even if the mounting surface was machined inwards.

Image

Brake disc inside wheel. Not a ton of clearance considering its a 16" wheel.

Image

What's not making sense in this pic is the wheel's hub centre is smaller than the brakes, whereas at the back the hub centre is definitely larger than the brakes. Huh? Gonna hafta look at that again.

Well looking at the picture of the wheel hub, it looks pretty clear to me that the car these wheels were mounted on didn't actually use that membrane that you're thinking cutting off wouldn't be a good idea. I'm not sure it would really matter if you cut that lip off anyway, since YOUR car wouldn't use them even if you rearranged the calipers/rotors to make them fit. Besides, you probably wouldn't have to cut the whole lip off anyway, and it wouldn't have to be a square cut - a chamfer would probably work. You may be weakening the wheels ever so slightly, but I would bet against it actually mattering.

If you haven't done so yet, measure the projection of the caliper off the surface of the hub, and the two radii shown below, and see what would be needed to make it work.

Wow. Thread revival! Here I am, a year and a half later. Zero progress. Yep, the last while has yielded very little by way of progress in the garage. For those that don't know, I had some health issues that took me out of commission for nearly a year. I'm back at work now, and just starting to get my feet under me again in the garage. Thanks to all those that have been supportive during this time.

In the last few weeks I've basically started to get the garage cleaned up and ready for more work. I've been working on bikes out there, but not cars. So the first thing I wanted sorted was my stereo. I figured this would help keep me motivated, and having just completed renos inside my house, I was lacking space for my old stereo in the house. So I moved everything but my turntable outside. The amp I was using was pooched, so I went online and found this sweet NAD amp off of Ebay for $135. A step up I might add.

Image

I built a stand for my new garage computer to sit right above it. Note the Coburn levels of fit and finish!
The computer came from the Coburn household. Its an iMac G4, which I equipped with a wireless card also from Ebay. I've got good signal from the house, so basically what the computer is there for is internet, and to home share my iTunes library wirelessly to the garage stereo. Yep, I've got my whole iTunes library streaming right outside. The swivel pedestal setup of the monitor is perfect for the garage.

Image

Then the computer is plugged right into the amp, and the amp goes to these old KEF speakers my Dad built many years ago. It all sounds pretty good for how much I've put into it.

Image
Image

I'm pretty happy with that. So today I decided to get going on the car. First thing I wanted to do was buy clamps for the intercooler piping. Since I've got new clamps everywhere else, I wanted something nice for these.

Image

So, without further delay, here is my first progress on the car in a year and half. Hopefully more will come soon.
