fwiw have bought 2 gateways for cheap recently ($499 and $599) at computer trends and have both been fine (even vista works!!) they are refurbs but haven't been used ie: demos, returns etc. sales staff are kinda pushy but i just ignored them and took the computer and refused all of their upsell stuff.

What kind of price range are you looking for? Imho $500 is a really good deal. laptops around $1k are always the best bang for buck. Dont ask why, its always around that price point. Just my opinion.

Yeah oddly enough I think the $499 model was the better deal. I can't remember offhand which processor it has but it's only one down from the other one but came with 2GB ram compared to 1 and has a wide screen. The more expensive one is a bit lighter (hence the smaller screen/footprint), has the slightly faster processor and a webcam, but only came with 1GB of ram (since upgraded) which is useless trying to run Vista.

I've run nothing but Dell for the last 10 years. Only crap if you want to upgrade. In those 10 years I've likely gone through 6 or 8 of them. Only had one ever give a problem and that was terminal but I have no issues with Dell. Just my 25ยข...

I bought an acer aspire one netbook. I love it, and they are cheap. It works for what I need it for, I surf the net and play a few (older) games on it. The battery life is wicked, lasted me 5.5 hours of my 6 hours flight playing red alert 2 the entire time. Its also great when using it on a car, tuned my friends rabbit and it was nice not having to carry around a bit clunker.

lap tops are so sensitive to heat and dirt/dust. From my understanding, they usually die from overheating because they get dirty and the fan becomes less effective.

You should have them properly cleaned at least annually, more frequently in a shop environment. I try and clean my tower annually and you wouldn't believe how dusty it gets in there with the fan pulling crap through.

FWIW I bought my Medion PC from computer trends 4(?) years ago and i don't think it's ever even crashed on me once. Fan gets a bit noisy, but it still chugs along just fine. I paid the $75 or whatever for the extended warranty but never needed it.

I've got 2 in the office (I've got a fleet of about 7-8 laptops) and they take the abuse of field work. Best damn laptop period.

My work sells old city of calgary waterworks laptops for about 350. I can look into it if you want. I am pretty sure they are IBM and come with an OS.

Thanks Blair but i don't like IBM'S!their hard drives suck,as well as the Battery life.
But i do like their missles.

And for 350.00 the city is smoking some good payote.
