Ok helping a family member who took a Volvo down to Portand. I don't doubt it can sell there, but thought I'd offer it to locals too.
Ad is as follows:
I am helping a family member sell a 242 GT, or, since it's an '80, simply a GT.
I haven't seen the car in a few years, but here's what I know:
Body: "good small town" rust repair and paint, including black and red OE stripes about 8-9 years ago. I'll be honest, shell was a little rusty (not an original Portland car, see details below), and I haven't seen the car in a few years. Apparently the clear coat may (?) be going away (or not?), and apparently there is at least one small rust bubble somewhere (?) on the car. Nice original silver GT grille has small break; can include spare grille with a crack and which has more substantial "weathering" (sun belt part). (may sell separate) Has some somewhat cheap looking Autozone-type black resin side molding in place of OE. Glass all excellent. Sunroof jams, is properly closed now and doesn't leak, but hasn't been open in several years. That can be regarded more as the owner being eccentric than the owner letting the car fall into disrepair!
Electrics- dead stock, original. Never cut up for trailer hitch [edit: apparently it did have a trailer hitch back in th'day], +T conversion, or aftermarket stereo, etc. Some features, like glove box light, fog lamps, -forget what else?- are disconnected [as a trial and error solution to phantom charging issues] by a hack Volvo shop who shall remain,,, umm well, "The Swede", who'd apparently never heard of the engine loom issue, though he "specializes" in these cars.
Interior- very decent stock GT, seats haven't been re-covered. Upholstery and foam is above average in that view. Some fading, a very little bit of stretching of fabric. A careful and knowledgeable detailer could redye the black and really bring it up. Dash pad has usual crack, but, it's indicative of the considered care that the crack (cracks?) were professionally repaired at one point 2-3 years ago. Rest of interior- headliner, window trims, door panels, carpet & mats, are exceptionally nice.
Car has relatively rare factory/dealer options: both Cruise and AC. A/C does not work. I am being told that shops say "needs r134 conversion before further diagnosis can be performed", but no parts have been identified as 'failed', per se, just no cold air. Could be a cheap fix...
Drivetrain- stock k-jet on b23-bored b21 block with stock b21 head and an "A-grind" cam. This is a Canadian spec car which has been in use for a number of years in the Portland area without catalyst or MPH speedo, through testing-clean at the tailpipe, through playing dumb, and through substantial luck. No garanteees you won't be put through the ringer when you go to get it cert'd. Any sale is as-is/where-is. I strongly advise being "pro-active", & putting a dummy cat/o2 sensor on, and swapping a US cluster in, before attempting to cert, so as not to open a can of worms where all of a sudden they want everything done to the letter of the law.
Axle is stock 3.91, wheels are clean original (Virgos), one has been refinished years ago. Tires are 205/55R15 Dunlop w10, I think they are called? Summer performance radials with a blocky wave pattern. They are at least 7 years old but have very few miles on them. O/d replaced with a good used unit about 25K ago. Trans taken down and done with fresh syncros and gaskets, about 30-35K ago. I *think* the car has approx 200 000 Km, or 125K miles.
All bills kept from, I believe, late 80's on. (Second owner)
Again, I have not seen the car recently, but lacking impartial evidence that it's gone suddenly downhill, I am advising a price of $2800 firm. This is one of these deals where the car has been in the family 18+ years and price is not as much a question of being hung up over pocketing the last several hundred, but of putting a slightly premium price to select for a new owner with the means and maturity to plan upkeep for the future.
Because I am not there to show the car, and because the owner has issues about internet[privacy], and works night-shift, please contact me by email via
iadr@hotmail.com or
iadr1@yahoo.com , for the "local" contact info. Car is in central/NW Portland OR.
