Oh, it's more work than that...you've got to fabricate an oil pan, there is no readily available transmission other than the auto for us in North America. So you'd have to work out some kind of conversion and no one has an adapter for sale to date. You could get an M90 from Europe if you've got $1000 to drop on a manual transmission. If not, what works for a flywheel?
Then there is the engine management issue - run stock stuff or an aftermarket system like MS. This is the reason people have stayed away from the 4 cyl to date. For all the work, you may as well go with the 5 cyl and get some extra umph for free.
That being said, it is a very compact and clean engine. They can produce reasonable power levels and have appeal for me (at least in 5 cyl form) as I want to have one vintage car that is able to pass some form of emissions (can't do that with SU's) and perform reasonably well and get decent economy. All possible in at 122 or 1800 due primarly to their light weight body.
I'm going to do this on my wagon project because I'm a little loopy and haven't had enough tears and trouble with the current car.
