Could be fun with a big turbo and intercooler...

The seller used the work "Crusher" - we know what they offer, so start just north of that. By the time the VW engine shows a HG problem, there is usually a crack between the combustion chambers (can't recall which pair) - it is possible to weld it, but good luck finding someone to do that job.

I hate working on that engine.

In the manual, they state that 1/8" cracks are "allowed." Yea, right. Allowed until the inevitable happens and it hemorrhages coolant or combustion pressure that is...

Good car for our friends in Kalifornia though. A d24T will run a while with ideal oil, rebuilt, with a perfect t-belt kit, better head stud kit with a good head that never overheats. I just hate them because they are dirty, inferiorly designed things (stock), that take forever to fix, use lots of special tools and need a lot of help to be half as good as almost any other diesel engine. They also take forever to tune so they aren't miserably slow, but aren't a huge smokestack either. Most of the ones that ever run worth a damn are real low mileage kept up engines.

I don't hate them as much as peter L in town who had to work on them every day in the 80s, but if I had to back in the day, I'm sure I would. Be a shame to crush a good low mile diesel shell, but I like it better when D24s stay dead.

Despite Jim's comments, I called on this one.

180000 km, original everything, needs a headgasket, mint paint, mint glass, mint genuinely.

needs a greasel conversion, big turbo, large IC and a different transmission (currently a BW55 bolted up)

200 OBO, would probably take 100, had a feeling.

Car is in Okotoks on four inflated tires, and comes with 4 extra 15" rims of sorts (virgos probably?)

+1 403 933 - 7195 is him, nice guy - lives in Black Diamond.

:-)

Athal - there's a swap for you and the price is right.

I thought that too for about 5 seconds until I realized I'd have to swap the full fuel system, probably including tank, lines, pumps, etc etc. At that point I might as well use the 242 shell matt and dale have- too much work for me!

Huh? Changing the tank and fuel lines is easy compared to installing a turbo engine in a 90+ 240, and you're willing to do that.

I'm not saying it's hard, just more work that I don't want to do.

What's hard about dropping a turbo motor in a 240? Even if it's LH 2.4 just have to swap some sensors, ballasts and ezk over, extend amm wires and...well IC brackets and whatnot. prob stay with whatever tranny was in there, even an auto.

If you make the Lh harness all one nice piece, it transfers in a little longer than the 40 minutes it takes me to change an engine harness in a 240. Fuel tank takes like 1.5 hours.

I didn't know Matt's 242 was in play - but that would be more than excellent. Give it a squirt and go. Sure it's lots of work, but a fully stripped and relatively rust free shell is what you're looking for. I hear Cloverdale paint has a special on their 2 part poly right now.

We should do a THRASH weekend. We could swing up and all jump on the car to get her done (like we all need more work - but I could get behind this idea).

I dunno, the fact that it's a 6 hour job for some, 6 months for others, just to get the engine bolted in (let alone all the wiring/sensor swaps, finding a 2.4 turbo computer, etc)? What's another 1.5 hours to change a tank? Of course you'd need to install your 242's wiring harness with the engine, but that can't be too hard.

Anyway, would it even need a swap? I'm assuming that the majority of the fuel system is similar to the gasoline system: tank, lift pump/level sender, and even the piping are probably all the same or close enough that it doesn't matter. Add a high pressure external pump and you're good to go. Once you wash the diesel out of the tank, it'll probably even run okay!

My 242 is completely in play - has never been out of play, for that matter. Time is running out, though - it's headed for the crusher as soon as the 745 is ready to go with it. Speak now (and get it out of the way of the soon-to-be-falling tree) or forever hold your piece. Peace. Whatever.

With enough guys you *might* get the electrical and mechanical done in a weekend. Paint is another story. There's the question of getting a hood, trunk, and two doors prepped too.
All for a vehicle that I won't(shouldn't) be able to drive half the year. Doesn't suit MY purposes, but if someone else wants it in the end (either buying the final product for a fair price, or buying all my parts up front)...I'll help out for sure.
