James made a suggestion that's stuck with me: to pop a looser torque converter behind the V6. Has anyone got one that they're not using, but knows is good? Oh yeah, and one that won't cost me much?

Poop. I saw your post and it occurred to me that I should ask, but it slipped my mind.

Anyone else?

Did we toss the one I had modified that was in the 245? I haven't looked in the stash of heavy iron behind the garage for a while...

Not sure, but it wasn't fully "turbo loose" if I recall. The one in that 760 would stall at 3000 on boost. May be better than what I have, may not. Truth be told, I don't remember what the one in the 780 slips to.

Does the V6 take the same size/bolt pattern converter?

Just musing...

I never kept track...

That's why the "maybe". I would assume it's the same, as it would only need to have a different flexplate to fit up to the V6 engine. It's got a funny centering hub that I assumed just stuck to the converter and pulled out of the crank, nothing I couldn't machine up myself if I can't get it off the old one.

I have one but can only answer affirmatively to 2 of your 3 requirements. It's in the 85 244ti parts car so it's not going to get used, it's free.99, but I have no idea what condition it's in. The little I know of the car it was a runner when the seller got it but it had running issues that were never resolved and he was cleaning out his yard. Based on that the tranny may have been OK but I can't say for sure.

Sweet! What I was trying to avoid is one that has been open to the elements for a million years. These things don't go wrong too often, so as long as it's been kept dry & clean, it's good enough for me.

I'm hoping I can get it tossed on the next stagecoach outta Lethbridge, or I can come get it one day this month. I deserve a road trip.

You realize that the stagecoach driver will have to remove said TC prior to loading on the coach? If you (or said SC driver) need a place to work we can push one non-runner out and the other non-runner in to the garage (heated :D ).

Crapsicles - I misread that. I thought it was from the blue car you donated to power the YROG, but I also thought that was an M46 car so I was surprised when you said you had a torque converter from it.

That's a bit beyond what I had in mind. What's the story on the 244? Is it worth anything to you?

Slightly OT but- You want a lock up or not? I'm back on the fence again about replacing my AW71 with an AW71L if and when I do motor work after driving my parents car (1993 945T with the L).

I found it annoying as sh*t driving up to Whistler. Every time we hit a hill, the car kicks down to third gear, then goes 4th-lock...slows down...kicks down to third. It just would not sit in 4th gear without locking up unless you were under 90kph. I don't think it helped the fuel economy at all. On a flat drive, for sure, but hills, no way. I'm not sure if it's supposed to do that or not, I can't remember what my old 945 did, but I know most modern cars will kick out the lock up before gearing down, if required.

No, I do not want a lockup. I don't know if the transmissions are different, lockup to no lockup, but if they are (and I suspect they would be) I'm never ever going to find a lockup transmission for the V6, which ended in '92.

On the 740 I just lock it out of 4th gear and let it rev a bit. I'm sure the fuel economy is better that way than lugging it. The 960 isn't (wasn't) any better. In fact it would pop out of lockup momentarily then gear down to 3rd, then lock up in 3rd. It was fine in 3rd lockup but as soon as it shifted into 4th again, it went into lockup asap. There was no way to drive it in 4th without it locking up. Having driven an AW71L (out of a naturally aspirated car) in a turbo car, I would not go that route again. The 2-3 shift under any sort of boost is painfully slow as is the 1-2 shift if I forget to pull it down into 2nd.

Back to the regularly scheduled programming... #-o
