Hey all,

I'm looking to buy a set of 15x6 or 16x6 rims for my 122s?

Thanks

122s have loads of room for wheels/tires. I've run 17X7 with no trouble. Don't get something too small because you think you have to...

What Dale said - and the bolt circle is 5 on 4.5" so it's as common as ditch water. People have run Ford Ranger wheels, Jeep wheels, or whatever you like. I'm running 17X7 replica LM wheels from Discount tire direct with a set of spacers from the kind gents at Avalanche Performance.

Went to a wheel store today & the guy said he has an old car with 17's & the ride is horrible. I drive the 122 daily & on the highway so I don't want to negatively affect the ride too much. The store recommended sticking with 15's.

Pylon & 122_Canuck how was/is the ride on 17's?

Neither car has much of the stock suspension left. Mine has full poly bushings with Bilstein HD shocks and lowering springs. On the roads in Calgary today I suspect the ride would be uncomfortable. I don't recall it being terribly uncomfortable on the highway though. I'll let Craig speak for his car.

It depends what your goals are. If you want it to corner like it's on rails, you won't be concerned with the ride 17s may give you. If you want a cushy highway cruiser, you'll get a car that handles more like a stock 122.

I'm not full poly - lower control arm busings are stock replacements. The rest of the poly came from SuperPro via Dale over the years. The IPD stuff is too squishy in my view. I've got VPD springs on my car and Billy HD's all around - it's plenty stiff and isn't all that pleasant if you want a cushy ride. You feel the road - literally but it corners like crazy and is super fun driven fast. Fine on the highway, I really like it on a cruise. I drove the car with this suspension set up on the stock wheels and tires for about 6 months and it was fine, the 17's make more of a difference when cornering or over bumps. Not that bad though, it's not like we're running rubber bands on the wheels.

The wheel shop I've been dealing with doesn't think much of plus sizing, at least for this car.
I decided to buy cheap ($50) steel rims but the shop is trying to sell me 15x6.5 rims with zero offset. I didn't think that was right & mentioned maintaining the postive offset but the guy said I didn't need to. I'm getting a bit confused.

I also think a larger wheel like a 16 inch would work better. I'm totally not concerned with looks at the moment. I'm about to take a long road trip & just need safe wheels.

Can anyone clear up this offset confusion for me?

+

Since this is posted in marketplace I might as well ask again if anyone has any 15x6 or 16x6 rims that would fit a 122.

Thanks

Zero offset won't work or look very good. Going to that sort of offset will work if you have really wide tires and need to push things further outboard to get clearance inboard. That's not needed or even desired with a stock(ish) wheel and tire. At zero offset you will be setting the center of the wheel an inch further outboard, increasing your track by 2 inches. That messes with steering geometry (Google "Scrub radius"). With a skinny tire it will look a bit like you've flipped the wheels around. You want something in the -20 to -25 range (ET-25). I might consider changing wheel/tire shops...

That's what I thought. Thanks dale.

So I want to maintain around the +24 offset regardless? Even on 16's?

The only reason to go to a lower offset (closer to zero moves the vertical centerline of the wheel inboard, pushing the wheel/tire outboard) would be to gain clearance because something is rubbing on the inboard side. I don't see an issue with 16x6.5 wheels unless you put some silly wide tires on them and I don't get that will happen.

Is there anywhere in town that anyone can recommend for wheels?

I've used these guys for mounting some tires. Seem like cool guys and are pretty progressive with regards to wheels and tires.

http://www.urbanexp.ca/

99% of the wheels on this forum have been purchased online or found on Kijiji. Paying full local retail prices for wheels seems like wasting money. On the other hand, if you need something yesterday, buying online isn't the greatest idea. Search Kijiji for 5x114.3 and you'll come up with about 20 pages of listings...

UrbanX wheels was a huge help! They actually took the time to look for something suitable that would fit properly, as opposed to the last wheel store that was way more interested in making a sale regardless of my concerns.

Still didn't find anything though.

The tires that are on the stock rims are old mud & snow 165/80/15's from Canadian Tire. I have no idea how old they actually are, but they must not have been used much. They still have a lot of traction left, just showing some signs of age on the sidewalls.

I guess I'm going to stick with them for now.
