Hey y'all,
I saw this ad on Kijiji last week, and figured I should check it out.
http://alberta.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehicle ... Z356670475

So Saturday I went out and met Murray, who lives 20 minutes south of here, and who is a former Volvo tech and Service Manager for what used to be the dealership here, Short Stop Auto. He's a super nice guy, and has many years of working on old Volvos, having been around them from the early 70's to the late 80's. He's got lots of good stories, and certainly knows his stuff.

I'm really really interested in getting the complete set of Greenbooks for the 240 he has, but have little interest/money for the rest. He agreed he'd separate them from the rest of the stuff, but was hoping I could buy it all and sell the rest to someone else...thus my post here. I figured I'd try to help him out.

Anyone interested in a complete set of Greenybluebooks for the 740? He's got parts microfische for the 240/740 stuff, as well as a bin full of legit Volvo tools. These include a K-jet fuel pressure tester, valve shim tools, bushing tools, and a bunch of stuff I didn't recognize. $600 seems like a lot to me, but I'm really not sure what this stuff is worth?

Thoughts? Interest?

Hm, that would be tempting depending on what tools he's got. I certainly don't need too many tools as I've learned my own tricks on how to get around anything on those cars, & I don't work on 'em much anymore anyway, but the tools part would be tempting.

Ring a ding ding...maybe I wasn't at home (wait, I only have a cell phone now). Anyway, I've created most of the tools I need, but would upgrade a few if I had the chance. Not interested in the books or microfiche stuff.

Ok cool. I've contacted Murray to get a specific list of all the tools. If I'm not able to find a buyer for the 740 books, I doubt I'll be able to get the whole lot. Anyone have any idea what a set of Greenbooks is worth?

I'll check to see if Murray is willing to sell individual tools. He also contacted me to tell me the remainder of the Volvo parts from the dealership are still at the Nissan dealership, and they want to sell them all. I'll check it out and see what they want, but fingers crossed there's still some older stuff in there....like an R-Sport 16 valve head.

Doubt you'll find an R-Sport head but there will be some silly cool stuff...like these 10 sets of unobtanium SE fog lights I bought from a guy in Ontario. I'd be interested to see what they have. How long since they've sold Volvos?

I might be interested in the 740 green books too...

I would bet it's mostly consumable type stuff, but I could be wrong. When we moved down here (1990) Short Stop was already history, most of the guys moved over to the new SAAB/Isuzu dealership which acquired a Saturn dealership and eventually became a Saturn only dealer. The Saturn dealership was owned by the same group that owns the Nissan dealer which is how everything ended up there now, we have dealt with Murray for years (great guy) but switched to Ellis Auto as none of the old Volvo guys were left in the back and work suffered as a result. Given the length of time, and number of moves, I would doubt there's much of interest but you never know...

What do you think they're worth Dale?

Yes, Jim's got the history down. Apparently Short Stop near the end of the 80's was selling Jeeps, but the Jeeps were more popular, so they phased out the Volvos. By the end of '88, the Volvos were gone, which is why Murray's Greenbook collection ends there. That combined with Volvo not wanting dealerships in small towns pretty much ended them. The dealership was apparently where the Petro-Can is now, on 6 Ave. S., a few blocks from my house. Damn.

Yep, I'm hoping there's something cool at Nissan. I'll report back after I go next week. Murray mentioned they still do warranty work for Valentine there, which is interesting.

They're worth what someone is willing to pay. Top dollar is to be had on eBay. Bottom dollar is to be had right here. I don't need to, nor can I, spend a lot of money on some books that will, for the most part, sit in the filing cabinet in my garage and collect dust.

Here's what Murray says about the tools:
Hi Gregory, I do have a list here of the tools I have, I'll try to group them as best as possible:
240 Series Engine: Misc. Seal Installers, Fuel Pressure Gauge, Various Valve Shim Pliers, Shim Bucket Compressors, Exhaust Gas Sampler Hose, Stromberg Carb Mixture Adjusting Tool, Fuel Pump Test/Run Relay, Angle Torque Gauge, Various 6 Cyl. Cylinder Head Tools.
Suspension: Frt. Strut Spring Compressors, All necessary Frt. Strut Replacement Tools, Front Camber Adjusting Wrench, Steering Rack Balance Adjusting Socket and Plate, Pitman Arm Puller, Rear Lower Control Arm Bushing Remover/Installer.
Trans./Driveline: Various Pilot Shafts, U-Joint Bolt Sockets, Overdrive Plug Socket.
Various Other Misc. Tools.
Hope this helps, Murray.

6 cyl head tools? PRV-6 or whiteblock, I wonder. I'm guessing PRV based on the year the shop would have closed up, and the age of the greenbooks.

Like I need to spend any more money on that damn thing... #-o

Yep, it'll be PRV or diesel, nothing newer. Unless someone wants the whole lot, I'll check to see if he'll sell individual tools. I doubt he will though at this point.

OD Plug tool - dibs if this goes a head. That's about all I'd be in for though :(
