So i wrecked my AW-72 a few weeks ago (no more third gear or overdrive), and I now have an M46 to replace it. Once my flywheel shows up (hopfully this week) I'll be attempting the swap. Now I was hoping for help with 2 things
-Does anyone have a clutch alignment tool I can borrow?
-Anybody know of a local place that will lighten my flywheel before it goes in? Any idea of cost if so?

maybe talk to alberta chrome and grind? they might be able to do it. i had them resurface my flywheel, price was decent and turn around was quick, see if they can do it.

I've got an alignment tool you can borrow.
I've gotten quotes from alberta chrome and grind (they've done heads for me) for a flywheel and it was something like 75 bucks and shop fees for a resurface on a flat one...lightening would cost more of course but probably worth it as long as you aren't running k-jet.

I have an alignment too too. You could try Calgary Machine up on 52 St and a bit south of 17th Ave SE. That guy is pretty reasonable. You should try to take about 9 lbs off that flywheel if you can. I've heard that people have done that on Brickboard.

Do you need some help with the swap ? I will help you if you'll return the favour someday and help me do the same swap on my 940.

Hey thanks everyone! Well now that I know that I have a couple of clutch alignment tools that I can borrow in the city, and a few people that would be willing to help (and I would certantly be willing to return the favor), I just have to wait on my flywheel to show up (and get lightened if money permits).

One thing occured to me last night at about 3 am, when all my good thoughts come to me.... I have lh 2.4, so I'm going to have to drill out the bellhousing for the vr (or something like that) sensor. Anybody done this? Looking at the bellhousing I can see where it would go, but it looks as though there's some wiggle room for where the hole would be drilled, and I'm a bit worried that if I get it too far to one side I'll be SOL!
Aside from that I think I have everything ready to go..
I'll update this when the flywheel reaches the city!

You could try to find the other type of bellhousing with that part cut out already if i'm reading that right. With lh 2.4 there is the crank position sensor that reads the flywheel correct? and the bellhousing that you have is from an older car that doesn't have a cutout for the sensor.

Where did you get the LH 2.4 flywheel from and how much did it cost you ?

There might be something in the 700/900 FAQ about retrofitting an older M46 bellhousing with a LH 2.4 crank position sensor. Either that or google "Volvo AW72 M46" Swap and see what you come up with. I think I did that once and came up with a few links to pages with a lot of good info on the subject. Can't remember if they had anything about how to pinpoint the location for drilling out the bellhousing to take the CPS.

I do, however, recall one article saying that you have to have a bellhousing from a car that was built no more than one or maybe two years before they introduced LH2.4 as only those bellhousings have provision for the CPS, just not drilled out. What year is your bellhousing from and M46 from ? Does the tranny have the J or P type Laycock on it ?

Well the tranny is out of a 86 (not perfect I know, but I really need a transmission with more than 2 working gears!). If I can't cut the piece out of this bellhousing then I think I'm going to be SOL. I'm pretty sure the only car that came with a suitable bellhousing is the 91 740 with a stick shift, so not exactly a dime a dozen.

I had'nt heard this bit about only the bellhousings for a few years before 2.4 was introduced having the cutout....Maybe it's time to post on turbobricks and try and find someone that knows this swap with 2.4 definitively.
I have read a few articles on the subject, but none mentioned the flywheel sensor... well the research goes on...

Ok did a little research. Found these 2 pics that I think answer my questions.

It looks as though there is just a notch out of the bellhousing (that I will have to make) to make room for the sensor that is bolted to the engine it'self. So I'm thinking this is good news since as long as I can make room for the sensor, it will work. No messing around with the position of the sensor like I was afraid would be the case!

So you're saying you just have to machine/drill out a notch somewhere on the bellhousing to so the sensor can see the holes on the flywheel ? Can you use the AW72 bellhousing as a guide to help you locate exactly where the notch should go on the M46 bellhousing ?

And (again) where did you get the LH 2.4 flywheel and how much did it cost you ?

Also, when are you going to do this swap and will you need help ? I'd be very interested in helping because I want to do this same swap on my '95 944T and helping you would be a great opportunity for me to learn exactly how it's done. Please PM or call me at 270-7319 as far in advance of swap day as possible to let me know when you plan to do the swap. I hope it's not this coming weekend, I'm out of town from Friday - Monday. Hey all!
So the flywheel just showed up! I'm having a bit of trouble deciding if it's worth the money to get it lightened, especially since it was just resurfaced and bead blasted by the previous owner. For those that have asked, I picked it out off TB for about $120 if I recall correctly.
I'm going to do the swap the weekend after this (weekend of 22, 23, 24th), So if you're still willing to help Rojer ( and raz and anyone else who would be willing to lend a hand), I'd love the help, and of course when you're ready to do your swap, I'd be more than willing to return the favour!
As for the 2.4 crank sensor there is a clearly defined indent in the bellhousing that needs to be removed. I might wait until I have the aw-72 bellhousing out to compare to, but I'm pretty confident about what needs to be removed after looking at it. Does anybody have one of those handheld angle grinder's that I might be able to borrow to cut that piece out? If not I might just go buy one...

Oh yeah finally, here is a list of what I have, can anybody think of something I'm missing so I can pick it up next week!
-M46 +bellhousing +driveshaft +crossmember
-2.4 flywheel
-clutch (one that came from the j/y has tons left on it)
-Pressure plate (also from j/y, looks to be in good shape. should I get it machined just in case?)
-clutch pedal +master cylinder + hard lines (installed!)
-Slave cylinder
-medium strength threadlock
-interior trim

Last thought. I can't find my mitchell cd that gave me torque specs and other good stuff like that. Does anybody have a way of looking up the torque specs for the bolts holding the flywheel to the crank? Would be muchly appreciated! That's the only thing I can think of that would have a torque spec, right?

I'm available to help you on Friday and Saturday. I have other commitments on Sunday, however.

I have a bbq I`m supposed to go to Saturday evening so I have to bug out Saturday afternoon around 4 pm or so depending on how far you live away from where I live so we should try to get an early start on Saturday in order to make the most of the day while I`m there.

What's the plan then for Friday ? When do you want to meet up and where ?
