240.

I bet Ians car could do it. Maybe mine next year...

I know car and driver did 260 in a stock 850 turbo on a test track.

I said 4 cyl rwd brick. My guess is it would be pretty hard to make any of 'em go 240 kph for any sustained period of time. I think V rated means the tire is rated for 240 kph (150 mph) for 24 continuous hours. My guess is you'd need close to 300 hp to get a rwd volvo to that speed given the aerodynamics you'd have to overcome. Most of the newer FWD/AWD cars are much more aerodynamic than a 2, 7 or 9 series so attaining those sorts of speeds with one of those newer cars might not be so tough. I wasn't talking about those cars though.

Copied from some site...

Nowhere can I find any length of time a tire must sustain the speed rating to be approved for that rating. Keep in mind, the lower the speed rating on a tire, the lees performance oriented the tire will be meaning it won't have the sidewall strength or compound to allow spirited driving to any degree...

Replacement tires must have a speed rating equal to or greater than the rating of the original tires to maintain vehicle speed capability. If the replacement tires are a lower speed rating than shown on the vehicle tire placard, the vehicle speed capability is restricted to that of the replacement tires.
You must choose a speed rating that meets your operating needs and ensure you do not exceed the rated speed of your tires.

P 93 mph (150 km/h)
Q 99 mph (160 km/h)
R 106 mph (170 km/h)
S 112 mph (180 km/h)
T 118 mph (190 km/h)
U 124 mph (200 km/h)
H 130 mph (210 km/h)
V 149 mph (240 km/h)
W 168 mph (270 km/h)
Y 186 mpg (300 km/h)
Z 186+ mpg (300+ km/h)

Also, while speed ratings are not a direct indicator of tire handling capabilities, it is generally true that a higher rating may translate to different handling characteristics. If you decrease the speed rating, you must ensure that you are familiar with the handling characteristics of your vehicle and adjust your driving to the lower rating.

I just checked out the subject on Wikipedia and here's what it said"

"Speed rating codes

The code is made up of one or two letters, or one letter and one number. It indicates the maximum speed that the tire can sustain for a ten minute endurance without being a danger."

I don't know when & where I heard it was 24 hours. I seem to recall being told that by somebody years and years ago but maybe I misheard or they were on glue or something. Oh well, live and learn...
