if you don't feel the need for speed, i understand that some of the newer n/a models get pretty good mileage

i personally like 7/9 series, turbocharged i think they look sleek in a wagon

All I can tell ya is what I know....and although I may be flamed for driving a wwd autotragic, my commute's mostly highway and I get 7.9l/100km when I put the good gas in...s70/850/etc not that bad on the mileage department.

I wouldn't worry too much about running hi-test, we have a 2002 V70 AWD that we have been running for quite awhile on regular with no problems, the computer adjusts the timing to compensate. We maybe lost 1-2 MPG on FE but a recent trip to Vancouver via the Crowsnest ie: up and down, back and forth repeat as needed yielded 7.9 l/100 km according to the onboard computer which admittedly is a touch optimistic. An S60 NA with a 5 speed wouldn't be a speed demon but should get 40 MPG on the highway.

Not sure why your 245 needs hi-test either, we also have an 86 740 (same engine) that runs fine on lo-test. Maybe needs a good seafoaming and Italian tuneup

dude really? as is my milage has gone to absolute hell (admittadly cause I filled up on Thursday with Superstore gas (hey, it was still cheap!) and then tossed a wee bit of silver in today....very very angry. I'm impressed with the 7.9 especially on the awd. You have my envy.

Roberta ran her 850 turbo on 87 octane for the longest time. Mileage suffers and so does power, but you can do it. It probably costs the same to run it on 92: the additional fuel economy is probably close to offsetting the 10% difference in price.

The naturally aspirated 850s, though - those things are pretty darn good on gas from what I hear, and that's what Raz was suggesting. Plus, they're much more common with a 5 speed than in the turbo variety.

I seriously doubt the naturally aspirated 850 needs high octane fuel.

Sounds like the same argument I had with my better half. I should sit down and work it out again but I think you're right that the better MPG on hi-test ends up being a wash and is probably better for the motor in the long run. My daughter just got back from a highway trip in the 86 740 NA m46 and got 36 MPG which is probably a little high as the odometer is out close to 10%. I would think the NA 850 with a stick should be close to the same.

It should, my C70 which has the High Pressure Turbo on a recent trip to Lethbridge at 120 kph averaged 34 mpg (those are US gallons)

All the new cars are designed to adapt pretty quickly to the diference between 87 and 91. The xc60 is supposed to run on regular to. The manufacturers are making a lot of the new cars run on regular now a days

My non-turbo 650 with automatic, gets about 500Km to a tank of gas in the city, in the summer. It drops off VERY quickly when it gets cold out. On the highway though, it gets pretty good mileage. Its been a long time since we took a road trip in it (and wouldn't trust it now) so I don't remember the specs, but it was pretty good. Around town, my dads 850 turbo on premium does very good mileage, probably better than mine. Again a while since I drove that.

I'd look for a S60 with a 5 speed. I bet it would get some good mileage. All the modern cars seem to run fine on low grade.
