Here is a pic of a modified honda (fit i believe?). I've always wondered about the turbo set ups on some performance tuned cars, whats with the no air filter dealy? I've seen a few of these setups kicking around online and never understood the logic behind it.

Air filters do restrict air flow. The principal behind the K&N filter system is a reduction in airflow resistance. As with any modification there is a trade off, in this case very high engine wear if grit or dirt enters the engine ... not to mention what would happen if a rock or bird was sucked in.

Ya, you'll see guys take them off on the dyno, or in this guys case, for a show.

But there's no dirt on a dyno, or on most of the cars you're gonna see something like that on.

I'm guilty of running without air filters on my Mini, because I couldn't fit them and couldn't afford ones that I could fit.

yea i guess i just never understood why they were willing to take the risk, it just seems like such a huge tradeoff to be doing something like that.

anyone I know with a big turbo, take their airfilter off for the drag, always.

I drove for 7 months with no filter, at all, in my honda 2.2 carb'd engine.

My filters never get dirty, unless you are driving on gravel roads alot you dont "need" them. When i had ITBs on my old 4age i didnt use filters for 2 years and the motor still runs fine.

I of course prefer to run a filter because of the what if but in my opinion you are not going to ruin a motor in a couple years without one.
