well dale, I'm not sure how else i'd be able to organize a whole bunch of trays of tools...cause i think they come in quasi-trays...but I will take your advice - wait a while on the tool box and just get a pretty one ;)

And...as far as the pegboard goes...i dont really have a wall to dedicate to oh look here are my tools. (although wait...tires and endlinks in the kitchen anyway....and this is why i don't live with a guy ;)

c'mon, it's gotta go with the kitchen decor...and red...yeah no ;)

a green would work...not a neon green! ;) now i'm gettin girlie!

I never suggested you do pegboard. You don't have a garage. I was merely saying I have 16 feet of pegboard above my workbench in the garage that holds a ton of tools. I don't need a big tool box...

I have a Husky bottom box. I love it.
I had it next to a friends low end Mac Tools one and they were damn near th same thing but mine was half the price.

Dales right though, crappy boxes suck to work with.

hokay. I got talked out of the tools...going to get a different set instead once it goes on sale.

AND...the battary....I had ian call me right after the AMA guy boosted me, telling me Costco had this optima battary for 130 bucks, and it was all well and good.

well, hate to say it andy, but i'll save some dough where I can. Drat, no costco membership, so I tried Walmart.

They have it. For 190.00. Ouch. I think I'll just wait until someone I know with a costco membership is going and then throw them some money or go with or something lol

Do tell...what set would be better than $400 off at Can Tire? How could someone talk you out of tools, this doesn't compute. Why would your Dad get pissy because you want to fix things on your car? Owning a 10 year old vehicule is insanity if you don't do some basic fixing yourself. That's the entire point of these forums (aside from the obvious social thing) - and I thought you were old enough to vote, tell pops to man-up and let you get your hands dirty.

needless to say i'm kinda not talking to my dad. it's a good thing that he lives in cold lake and i live here...and as of summer he will be back in ontario and i'll be out here.

And - Ian has a set that's maybe about 40-50 bucks more and apparantly MUCH better quality. so...yeah. I accept ian's wisdom.

A couple of things...

First, $200 is a chunk of change to drop on a first set of tools...true enough. There are many tool sets with fewer tools for much cheaper. In fact, Canadian Tire puts on a nice one that has a basic socket set and wrench set for about $60. I bought one for my car tool kit. 378 pieces might be a little big for your first tool purchase but $400 off for those same tools makes it a killer deal that doesn't come along very often.

The quality of the tools is somewhat irrelevant, at this level of quality. Yes, the tools Ian speaks of are likely Mastercraft Maximum...slightly better quality than this set. They both carry lifetime warranties (as does Power Fist from Princess Auto) but just where and when are you going to break a tool? I really think spending more money on "higher quality" tools is wasting money in your case. If you want to go that route and get the best quality stuff, go straight to the top and price out some Snap-On tools. You'd better be sitting down though. You'll likely pay $5000 for that same group of tools Canadian Tire just sold for $200. Hell, you likely can't buy the 1/2" ratchet for $200 from Snap-On. Is it worth it? Not for you. Not for me. Not for 90% of the people out there. Even for the other 10% I can't imagine justifying spending that much on tools. They sell a ton of tools though so someone has lots of money to spend.

Mastercraft tools are good tools. Craftsman tools are good tools. Mastercraft Maximum are slightly better tools. They're all good enough for anything you'll throw at them.

And I'm not doubting Ian's judgment here. He's been turning wrenches for much longer than I have. I'm just doubting you really need to spend extra money for better quality than Mastercraft...

The one nice thing about the Maxiumum series is that they've got a nice polished finish, and are easier to clean. At least the wrenches are. The wratchets might be better too - the ones that come with the 371 kit have the reversers in a goofy place and there's nothing to grip onto to turn the socket from the wratchet head. If you know what I mean. There's a definite difference in screwdrivers too - the regular Mastercraft don't have hardened ends, while the Maximum do. I've wrecked many of my regular Mastercraft flat and phillips screwdrivers just by turning a screw that's too tight, while the Maximum ones don't damage easily.

Maximum are definitely much better tools, and knowing what I now know, I'd spend the difference. They'll last much longer.

Yes the tools I spoke to Kat about are the Maximum series at CT. and the difference is substantial. I bought Cody a set of Maximum for Christmas, then I did buy a set of the ones on sale this week. The finish and quality of the Maximum series are better, but there is a difference in the socket wall thickness, the Maximum being much thinner which means they will fit on bolts/nuts where the other sockets will not. The biggest difference was with the wrenches, the difference between the two sets is like night and day. Again the Maximum are beautiful with a great finish and slim handles and thinner wall box ends, the standard CT wrenches are very VERY crude, thick handles and would not fit on many bolts if recessed slightly. For only about $40-$50 more the Maximum set is well worth waiting for. Mind you that is just my opinion.

By the way I am keeping the $199 set, they will become my travel / PnP / neighbour needs to borrow. tools.
