I've been riding road bikes since 1972. Been across Canada multiple times (far as Newfoundland,) lots of the USA, the wet coast or at least BC interior most summers. Lots of good advice here, the best being to think "invisible" and watch for the behavior and intentions of other drivers. Protective clothing makes a big difference if/when the road comes up to meet you. The things that have come closest to getting me into serious trouble are self-indulgence and being stupidly competitive.
